Sourcing leather golf shoes from China

Leather golf shoes from China carry 6% to 8% UK duty across the classification candidates below. Retailers must ensure footwear is correctly labelled. Confirm whether the construction qualifies as sports footwear, rather than relying on the golf description. Cambridge China Bridge sources leather golf shoes.

Leather golf shoe duty and material controls

Heading 6403 covers footwear with leather uppers and outer soles of rubber, plastics, leather or composition leather. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the selected classification candidates carried 6% to 8% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions are recorded for these lines. The rows are conditional classification candidates, not interchangeable codes for every golf shoe.

The sports line attaches fluorinated-greenhouse-gas and seal-product import controls. Official guidance prohibits fluorinated gases in footwear; ask your broker to confirm the declaration requirement for the actual shoe. The other selected lines attach CITES import and export controls and seal-product import controls. For CITES-listed leather moving between China and Great Britain, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable permit requirements. For seal products intended for commercial sale in Great Britain, confirm eligibility under the indigenous-community exemption and any seal catch certificate requirement with the relevant authority or your customs broker.

HMRC says trainers do not classify as sports footwear unless they fall within tennis, basketball, gym, training shoes and the like. Have your broker assess spikes or cleat fittings, sole construction, upper and sole materials, ankle coverage, intended wearer and measured insole length before confirming the commodity code. Do not assume a spikeless golf shoe qualifies for a training-shoe row. See the leather dress shoe guide for the wider heading.

Specify the leather, golf sole and cleat system

Specify the leather species, finish, thickness and colour, lining, footbed, last and size allocation. State whether the sole uses removable cleats or moulded traction, and identify the cleat attachment system and replacement component. Agree heel hold, forefoot width and stability during a golf swing against fitting samples. Set an agreed test method for any water-resistance claim, including the tongue, seams and sole joint.

Retailers must ensure footwear is correctly labelled. Confirm the composition-label requirements for the upper, lining and sock, and outer sole with the relevant authority, then match artwork to production materials. Confirm applicable UK REACH restrictions for chromium VI in skin-contact leather and relevant azo dyes. Arrange material-specific checks through testing and certification. Confirm your responsibilities as an importer for consumer product safety with the relevant authority.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed-size order of 135 pairs of leather golf shoes; values are illustrative under 6403 19 00 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £135 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,135. Duty at 8% is £250.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,385.80, so it is £677.16. Import taxes total £927.96; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £250.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare production pairs with approved fitting samples across the size run; check heel lift, toe clearance, forefoot pressure and stability during a swing.

Soles and cleats: check sole alignment, bonding and tread consistency; fit and remove replacement cleats, checking engagement, retention and damage around the sockets.

Leather and water resistance: check matching panels, finish transfer and flex cracking; test the finished construction against the agreed water-resistance method and match chemical reports to supplied materials.

Labels and arrival condition: compare composition labels with the specification, check paired sizes and carton allocation, and inspect for damp boxes, mould and crushed heel counters. Record defects using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A cleat can appear seated yet loosen because its fitting does not match the socket. A substituted sole compound can alter traction and flex, while poor bonding can open at the forefoot. Specify the complete cleat system and compare production sole materials with the approved sample before accepting stock.

Water can enter through the tongue, stitching or sole joint even when the leather finish sheds droplets. A shoe that fits while standing can allow heel movement during a swing. Test finished pairs for the intended use, and inspect arrivals before distribution. Damp packaging, mould and inconsistent leather colour should be recorded against identifiable cartons.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on leather golf shoes from China?

The selected classification candidates carried 6% to 8% duty on 29 September 2026, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions. Confirm the construction and exact commodity code.

Do spikeless leather golf shoes use the sports footwear code?

Do not assume so. Ask your broker to assess the actual sole and construction. The training-shoe rows apply only where the shoe meets that description; the golf name alone does not settle classification.

What labels do leather golf shoes need?

Retailers must ensure correct labelling. Confirm composition-label requirements for the upper, lining and sock, and outer sole with the relevant authority. Match the artwork to the actual materials.

How do I check leather golf shoe samples?

Check heel hold and forefoot fit during a swing, cleat engagement and retention, sole bonding and flex. Test any water-resistance claim on finished pairs, including seams and the tongue.
