Lawn mower blade duty: 0%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, heading 8208 covers knives and cutting blades for machines or mechanical appliances. Lawn mower cutting blades fall within the agricultural, horticultural or forestry machine blade line, 8208 40 00 00. The table shows different mower blade types using this same commodity line.

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China under this line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control recorded. This is the blade line, rather than a classification for a complete mower.

Confirm the blade's function and construction against the commodity code guide. For complete equipment, see lawn mowers and robot mowers.

Specify the mounting pattern and cutting profile

Supply a drawing and an approved sample for each mower model. Specify blade length, width, thickness, centre-hole shape, locating holes, offset, cutting direction and lift profile. Distinguish ordinary cutting blades from mulching profiles and pivoting robot mower blades. Agree the steel grade, hardness, heat treatment, coating and balance acceptance criteria before production.

For consumer replacement blades supplied in Great Britain, general product safety rules require safe products. Importers must provide relevant information about risks that are not immediately obvious and precautions against them. Prepare model-specific fitting and handling information, and agree how compatibility will be checked before accepting stock.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 4,000 replacement lawn mower blades under 8208 40 00 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £29,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £29,200, so it is £5,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure holes, slots, thickness and offset against the drawing; trial-fit samples to the intended mounting assembly and check clearance and cutting direction.

Steel and hardness: match material certificates to the batch, arrange sample material checks and measure hardness against the agreed specification. Examine edges and mounting holes for cracks and burrs.

Balance and profile: check flatness, lift shape and blade balance using the agreed method. Compare samples with the approved blade and arrange a controlled cutting trial.

Packing and traceability: check edge protection, corrosion and carton damage on arrival. For consumer products, include the responsible producer's name and address and a product or batch reference on the blade or packaging where reasonable.

What goes wrong

A blade can match the advertised length yet have the wrong centre hole, offset or lift profile. Mounting faces may not seat correctly, and an apparently similar blade may foul the deck. Avoid approving compatibility from a photograph or a supplier's model list alone.

Steel substitution and inconsistent heat treatment can leave blades prone to bending or edge damage. Uneven grinding can upset balance, while coating may conceal burrs or surface defects. Agree quality inspection around fit, material, hardness and balance, with batch records retained.
