Sourcing laser marking machines from China
Laser marking machines within heading 8456 carry 0% to 4% UK duty from China, with ordinary laser machines at 4%. New machinery sold in Great Britain must have CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Cambridge China Bridge sources laser marking machines.

Duty depends on the process and intended use
Heading 8456 covers machine tools working by removal of material, including laser processes. This guide covers laser marking machines within that scope. Describe whether the machine engraves, removes a coating or only changes surface colour when asking for classification. The table shows machine variants sharing a code. See the wider laser cutting and plasma machine guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, other laser machines under 8456 11 90 00 carried 4% duty from China. Code 8456 11 10 00 carried 0% for machines solely or principally used to manufacture printed circuits, printed circuit assemblies, parts of heading 8517 or parts of automatic data processing machines. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.
Do not select the duty-free line simply because the machine marks an electronic product. Give your customs broker the operating process, intended manufacturing use and technical specification, then confirm the commodity code. Budget import VAT separately from duty using UK import duty and VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fibre laser marking machines that remove material | 8456 11 90 00 | 4% | None |
| Laser machines principally for making printed circuits or specified electronic parts | 8456 11 10 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the mark, material and workstation
Send actual substrates, coatings and artwork for trials. Specify whether you need surface contrast, coating removal or engraved depth, together with the marking field, smallest text, permitted positioning variation and required cycle time. Ask for results across the usable field, rather than a sample made only at its centre. Agree how marks will be checked after cleaning or abrasion.
Record the laser source maker, model, optical output, wavelength and pulse settings, plus the scan head, lens and focusing arrangement. Agree fixtures, rotary marking, cooling, extraction connections, English software, file compatibility and licence ownership. Require a demonstration of variable text and readable barcodes using your own files.
For supply in Great Britain, new machinery must carry CE or UKCA marking and come with a declaration of conformity and English instructions. The responsible person must compile the technical file and make it available on request. Ask for safety evidence covering the complete workstation, including its enclosure and accessories, through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 3 enclosed fibre laser marking workstations with rotary fixtures under 8456 11 90 00, invoiced at £38,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £42,000. Duty at 4% is £1,680. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £43,680, so it is £8,736. Import taxes total £10,416; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,680 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the installed source, lens, controller and machine serial number to the agreed specification and conformity documents.
Marking: run your materials and artwork at the agreed settings; check contrast, depth, position, barcode readability and repeatability across the marking field.
Safety: have a competent inspector check enclosure condition, door interlocks, emergency stops, warning labels and extraction connections against the documented design before shipment and after installation.
Delivery: check for transport damage, loose fixtures and dirty optics; confirm accessories, English instructions, software access and backed-up settings. Use the agreed trials during quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A demonstration on the seller's material can conceal weak contrast on your coating, distortion near the field edge or a cycle time that excludes loading and focusing. Source or lens substitutions can change the result. Keep approved samples, saved settings and the component list, then repeat the same trial on arrival.
An open marking head can leave the beam accessible, while an added enclosure may have ineffective interlocks. HSE says protective eyewear depends on the employer's risk assessment. Exposure to hazardous substances must be prevented or adequately controlled; assess fumes from your actual substrate and coating, and agree extraction before ordering. A conformity mark alone does not show how these hazards have been addressed.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on laser marking machines from China?
Under 8456 11 90 00, duty is 4%. The specified electronics-manufacturing laser line, 8456 11 10 00, is 0%. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure.
Does a laser marking machine need CE or UKCA marking?
New machinery placed on the Great Britain market must carry CE or UKCA marking and be supplied with a declaration of conformity and English instructions.
How do I choose the right laser for my material?
Compare trials on your actual substrate and coating. Specify contrast or engraved depth, marking field and cycle time, then retain the approved sample and settings.
What should I test before paying the balance?
Run your files and materials, check marks across the field, verify installed components and software access, and have enclosure, interlocks and emergency stops checked against the documented design.
