UK duty on large-format view cameras

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 9006 covers photographic cameras other than cinematographic cameras, photographic flash apparatus and relevant parts. Large-format sheet-film view cameras are candidates for 9006 59 00 00. The selected camera, camera-accessory, electronic-flash and flash-accessory lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions.

The tariff attaches a cultural-goods export-licence control to these lines. Government guidance says cultural-interest objects exported from Great Britain to destinations outside the UK need a UK export licence. The tariff entry should be checked in its export context; ask your customs broker to confirm any requirement relevant to your shipment.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual camera and separately ordered accessories. Digital cameras belong to heading 8525, rather than this film-camera heading. The table includes optional flash equipment, not just camera bodies. For related film-camera coverage, see medium-format film cameras.

Specify the back, bellows and camera movements

Choose a folding field camera or a monorail camera and specify the sheet-film format, back interface and compatible film holders. Agree whether the order includes lens boards, a lens and shutter, focusing screen, bellows and carrying case. Request drawings for the holder seating surface and lens-board opening, rather than accepting a statement that accessories are universally compatible.

Specify bellows extension and compression, front and rear tilt, swing, rise, fall and shift, plus how each movement locks. Confirm that the intended lens can focus at the required distances without stretching the bellows or obstructing movements. Approve a sample with your own film holder and lens.

Consumer models supplied in Great Britain must be safe. Include checks for sharp edges, finger traps, loose focusing-screen glass and insecure locks in the sample assessment. Ask for operating instructions that explain assembly, movement locking and safe handling.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 mechanical view-camera bodies, without lenses under 9006 59 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Light-tightness: inspect bellows folds, seams, corners and mounting joints while extending and moving the camera. Test the back with the agreed film holder inserted and its dark slide withdrawn.

Focus alignment: compare the focusing-screen plane with the loaded film-holder plane. Make real film exposures to check that screen focus produces sharp negatives.

Movement locks: operate focusing, tilt, swing and shift through the agreed travel. Check backlash, repeatability and whether the standards or lens board creep after locking.

Arrival condition: check screen glass, rails, threads, holder seating and supplied accessories against the approved sample. Record shipping damage and use quality inspection to agree acceptance checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A camera can look correct on the focusing screen yet produce soft negatives when the screen and film planes differ. Bellows pinholes fog film, stiff folds restrict wide-angle movements, loose standards drift and poorly fitting backs admit light. A holder that clips into place is not proof of correct seating.

Control these risks with a sample exposure test using the intended lens and holders, followed by inspection against the approved assembly. Keep camera-body checks separate from optional electronic flash checks. For battery-powered flashes, confirm any electrical-equipment waste and battery obligations with the relevant authority; the site's camera and flash guide provides further buying guidance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on large-format view cameras from China?

The supplied tariff record, read on 1 October 2026, gives 0% duty for 9006 59 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Will my existing film holders fit a Chinese view camera?

Do not rely on the format name alone. Agree the back interface and holder seating dimensions, then test your actual holder for secure seating, light-tightness and focus alignment.

Does a large-format camera order include the lens?

Only if the specification says so. List the camera body, lens board, lens, shutter, holders, screen and bellows separately, and confirm which items are included.

How do I check a view camera before shipment?

Use the intended lens and film holder for sample exposures. Check bellows and back light-tightness, screen-to-film focus alignment, movement locks and accessory fit.
