UK duty on laboratory muffle furnaces

Heading 8514 covers industrial and laboratory electric furnaces and ovens, associated induction or dielectric heat treatment equipment, and parts. Resistance-heated laboratory muffle furnaces fall within the other resistance-heated furnace line, 8514 19 80 00. The table repeats that code for different buying specifications; these are not separate tariff categories.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 October 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. This includes the muffle furnace line and other furnace parts under 8514 90 70 00.

Confirm the commodity code using the heating method, laboratory use and model specification. Check separately supplied components individually rather than assuming every spare is a furnace part. For other heating technologies, see the wider electric furnace guide.

Specify the chamber and loaded heating cycle

Specify continuous working temperature separately from maximum temperature. Agree usable chamber dimensions, crucible layout, sample load, heating rate, hold programme and acceptable temperature variation across the loaded chamber. Ask for a witnessed run using calibrated temperature measurement rather than relying solely on the controller display.

Agree the supply voltage, connection, controller, thermocouple type, replaceable heating elements and refractory lining. Define door interlocks, independent over-temperature protection and any exhaust connection needed for your samples. For Great Britain, confirm the applicable UKCA or CE marking, declaration of conformity and electromagnetic compatibility requirements with the relevant authority, and require English instructions for the supplied model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of two laboratory muffle furnaces, not a quotation under 8514 19 80 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Heating performance: compare the loaded chamber survey, heating rate, hold stability and controller reading with the agreed acceptance criteria.

Electrical safety: have a competent person check earthing, insulation, door interlocks and over-temperature protection against the agreed specification.

Documents: match the model and rating plate to the declaration, test evidence, wiring diagram and spares list. The importer must ensure that instructions accompany the equipment in easily understandable English.

Arrival condition: inspect the refractory lining, door closure, element supports and thermocouple for damage before commissioning. Compare the delivered equipment and accessories with the packing list.

What goes wrong

A furnace can reach its advertised maximum temperature while failing to hold a uniform temperature around loaded crucibles. Controller overshoot, a poorly positioned thermocouple or uneven element heating can undermine repeatable results. Put the loaded acceptance test and its pass criteria into the purchase specification.

Refractory cracks, displaced elements and damaged door insulation can appear after transport. Record arrival damage before commissioning and agree replacement element, thermocouple and lining specifications before ordering. Use the inspection guide to define the checks and evidence required.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on laboratory muffle furnaces from China?

The supplied tariff reading shows 0% duty under 8514 19 80 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm the code against the actual furnace specification.

Can I sell a Chinese muffle furnace with CE marking in Great Britain?

Confirm the applicable UKCA or CE marking, declaration of conformity and electromagnetic compatibility requirements with the relevant authority. The importer must ensure that an easily understandable English manual accompanies the equipment. Check these for the supplied model.

How should I test a laboratory muffle furnace before shipment?

Run the agreed programme with representative crucibles and load. Compare calibrated chamber measurements, heating rate, hold stability and controller accuracy with the written specification.

What should I check when the furnace arrives?

Inspect the lining, elements, door insulation and thermocouple for transit damage. Match the rating plate, documents and accessories to the order, then arrange electrical checks before commissioning.
