Sourcing Isosorbide from China

Isosorbide from China carries 6% UK duty under the relevant anhydrous sorbitol-compound line, with no listed suspension or trade remedy. Importers must assess chemical classification and establish their UK REACH position before shipment to Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources isosorbide.

Isosorbide duty and chemical controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2932 covers heterocyclic compounds with oxygen hetero-atoms only. The relevant line for isosorbide is 2932 19 00 30, described as anhydrous mannitol or sorbitol compounds, excluding maltol and isomaltol. The table repeats this line for different buyer uses; these are not separate tariff classifications.

The supplied tariff record gives 6% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension on this line. It attaches export controls on dangerous chemicals and waste. Ask your customs broker to confirm their relevance to your shipment. For imports into Great Britain, listed chemicals require annual quantity reporting under the prior informed consent scheme, but no import notification under that scheme.

For shipments into England, waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. If buying recovered or off-specification material, confirm its status and applicable controls before shipment. Confirm the commodity code using the chemical identity and composition. For other products within this heading, see the sucralose and furan chemicals guide.

Specify isosorbide identity, water and intended use

Specify isosorbide itself, rather than its nitrate derivatives or a formulated blend. Agree the chemical identity, intended industrial or laboratory use, assay method, water content, colour and relevant impurities. Ask for actual batch results and test methods on the certificate of analysis, rather than a generic specification sheet.

For polymer or resin work, agree acceptance criteria for water, acidity and colour with the person running the process. Test a representative sample in that process before approving bulk supply. Specify sealed moisture-resistant packaging and agree how samples will be drawn from the shipment.

Importers are responsible for chemical classification. For Great Britain, HSE guidance requires substance registration at or above 1 tonne per year; establish the applicable UK REACH registration arrangements before ordering. Ask a chemicals adviser to confirm the position for your business, annual volume and intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 1 tonne of isosorbide in sealed bags for process trials (illustrative) under 2932 19 00 30, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £980 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,480. Duty at 6% is £208.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,688.80, so it is £737.76. Import taxes total £946.56; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £208.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the purchase specification, container labels, safety data sheet and batch certificate; independently confirm that the sample is isosorbide.

Assay and impurities: test a sample drawn from the shipment against the agreed methods and limits; compare results with the batch certificate.

Water and appearance: check water content, colour, visible contamination and caking against your agreed acceptance criteria.

Packaging and traceability: inspect liners, seals and signs of water ingress; match batch numbers and quantities to the packing list. Set the sampling scope through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A supplier's assay figure may use a different reporting basis or method from your specification. An acceptable assay alone does not establish suitability for your process: check water, colour and the agreed impurities separately. Hold material with damaged seals or unexpected caking until sampling and testing resolve the concern.

A generic certificate can conceal a mismatch between the tested batch and the delivered bags. Require batch-specific results and retain labelled samples. Resolve inconsistent product names, composition or safety information before releasing the shipment for use.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on isosorbide from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 6% under 2932 19 00 30, with no listed suspension, anti-dumping duty or countervailing duty. Confirm that the exact product fits this line.

Do I need UK REACH registration for isosorbide?

HSE guidance requires registration for substances imported into Great Britain at or above 1 tonne per year. Confirm the applicable registration arrangements for your business before ordering.

What should an isosorbide batch certificate show?

Ask for chemical identity, batch number, actual assay and water results, agreed impurities and the test methods. Match the certificate to the delivered packaging.

Can I use laboratory-grade isosorbide in my production process?

Assess it against your production specification and trial it in your process. A grade name alone does not establish acceptable water content, colour or impurity levels.
