Sourcing piperonal from China

Piperonal from China has a 6% base UK duty, suspended to 0% for qualifying material. It is a Category 1 drug precursor: importing into Great Britain requires Home Office authorisation for each consignment and a valid domestic licence before applying. Agree identity, assay and intended use before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources piperonal.

Piperonal duty and precursor controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2932 covers heterocyclic compounds with oxygen hetero-atoms only. Piperonal has the dedicated commodity code 2932 93 00 00. The supplied tariff data contains only this piperonal line, so the table shows that line alone.

The duty on goods from China is 6%, with an autonomous suspension to 0%. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products containing different components. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded for this line. The tariff attaches Home Office precursor authorisation controls. Ask the Home Office to confirm piperonal's classification as a Category 1 precursor; individual consignment authorisation is required for imports from China into Great Britain.

The tariff also attaches an export waste control. Waste shipment controls apply only when the material is waste; ask your customs broker to confirm the attached measure's relevance and any requirements for your shipment. Confirm the commodity code using the substance identity and composition. See the wider oxygen heterocyclics guide for other substances.

Specify piperonal identity, assay and use

State whether you are buying piperonal itself or a blend containing it. Agree the assay method, impurity profile, water content, residual solvents, appearance and intended application. Request a batch certificate of analysis and safety data sheet. For fragrance work, agree a reference sample and assess the material in your formulation rather than accepting an odour description alone.

Hold a valid domestic licence before applying for the import licence. Import licences cannot be issued retrospectively, so settle authorisation before dispatch. Ask the Home Office to confirm whether supplying Category 1 substances requires an end-user declaration stating the intended use. Under UK REACH, businesses must identify and manage the risks of substances they manufacture and place on the Great Britain market; review your position for the planned supply.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A sealed trial batch for fragrance formulation, illustrative under 2932 93 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £980 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,480. Duty at 6% is £208.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,688.80, so it is £737.76. Import taxes total £946.56; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £208.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare an independently drawn sample with the agreed identification test and reference material; fragrance alone does not establish identity.

Batch analysis: match the certificate to the delivered lot and compare assay, impurities, water and residual solvents with the purchase specification.

Packaging: check seals, liners, closures and evidence of leakage or contamination before opening; follow the agreed storage instructions.

Documents: reconcile the substance name, supplier, recipient and shipment details across the licence, invoice, packing list and batch certificate. Use quality inspection to agree how samples and discrepancies will be recorded.

What goes wrong

A quotation can describe a piperonal-containing fragrance blend as though it were the separate substance. That can change both the specification and the applicability of the duty suspension. Another risk is receiving a generic certificate that does not identify the delivered batch. Keep questionable material separate while identity and analysis are checked.

Dispatching before the import authorisation is settled creates a problem that a retrospective licence cannot resolve. Treat licences, intended-use information and shipment documents as part of the order specification. For formulation work, reject unexplained changes in colour, impurity profile or performance against the approved sample.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
