Sourcing integral-blind glass from China

Insulating glass units with integral blinds from China carry 0% UK duty across the listed heading 7008 lines, with no listed trade remedy. For building use, confirm with the relevant authority which performance documents and marking are required, and match safety glazing to the installation. 0% duty on integral-blind glass units

Heading 7008 covers multiple-walled insulating units of glass. This guide concerns sealed glass units containing blinds, particularly manually operated magnetic systems. Complete framed windows are classified by their frame material. See the double-glazed units guide for the wider product family.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, all listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff extract lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or import controls. Tinted and coated variants appear separately in the table but share a commodity code.

Confirm the commodity code using the glass coating, pane arrangement and actual goods shipped. The other two-pane line includes units separated by air, other gases or a vacuum; gas filling alone does not put a unit in the residual other line.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026.

Specify the glass and the enclosed blind

Send a cutting list and drawing showing pane make-up, coating face, overall thickness, cavity, spacer colour and edge seal system. Specify blind material, slat colour, tilt and lifting functions, control side and the position of the external magnetic operator. Check that the operator remains accessible after the unit is fitted into the intended frame.

For building use, obtain the declaration of performance and marking evidence, and match safety glazing and energy performance to the installation. CE marking remains available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market. Ask for test evidence covering the supplied glass and seal configuration with the blind installed, rather than relying on documents for a different sealed unit.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Mixed-size manually operated integral-blind glass units, illustrative order under 7008 00 81 00, invoiced at £21,000 free on board, with £2,400 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £23,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £23,400, so it is £4,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Blind operation: test tilt and any specified lifting function with the unit upright. Check for sticking, uneven slats, incomplete travel and loss of magnetic coupling.

Glass and dimensions: compare sampled units with the cutting list, including overall thickness, coating face, control side and operator clearance within the intended frame.

Seal and cleanliness: inspect edge seal continuity, corners, trapped particles and visible moisture. Check that the supplied spacer and sealants match the agreed seal test evidence.

Arrival and packing: inspect crates before unloading, then check for cracked panes, chipped edges, displaced blinds and missing operators. Confirm edge supports, separators and corner protection. Agree the scope of quality inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A blind can operate on a loose sample but become inaccessible once the glazing bead covers its operator. Slats can rub against the glass or spacer, lifting mechanisms can jam, and the wrong control side can make a unit unsuitable for its opening. Approve a sample fitted into the intended frame and record the accepted operation.

Dust trapped inside the cavity cannot be wiped away after installation. Weak seals cause misting, while poor bracing causes glass breakage in transit. Agree how the supplier will resolve sealed-in blind faults, identify each unit against the cutting list and retain photographs of packing and arrival damage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on integral-blind glass units from China?

The supplied tariff extract shows 0% across the listed heading 7008 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Can I use ordinary double-glazing documents for units with integral blinds?

Ask the supplier to confirm that the declaration of performance and supporting test evidence cover the supplied glass, seal system and integral-blind configuration.

How do I check magnetic integral blinds before ordering?

Fit an approved sample into the intended frame. Check operator access, magnetic coupling, tilt, any lifting function and slat clearance with the unit upright.

What if a blind jams inside a sealed glass unit?

Agree the supplier's repair or replacement procedure before ordering. Confirm how affected units will be identified and what evidence the supplier needs to assess a fault.
