Sourcing industrial process chillers from China
Industrial process chillers from China under heading 8418 carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines. Refrigerant controls and machinery conformity must be checked before import and sale in Great Britain. Specify cooling performance at your actual operating conditions. Duty and refrigerant controls
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the selected industrial process chiller and refrigeration parts lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions for these lines. Heading 8418 covers refrigerating and freezing equipment; process chillers usually fall under 8418 69.
The tariff attaches restrictions on entry into free circulation relating to ozone-depleting substances, and F-gas import controls to the HFC-charged chiller and selected parts lines. Ozone-depleting substances must not be used in new equipment. Where quota authorisations or delegations are required, insufficient coverage prevents import of pre-charged equipment into Great Britain. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable declarations and documents before shipment.
Confirm the commodity code using the complete machine specification, intended function and refrigerant charge. The table includes repair parts as well as complete chillers; parts codes are not alternatives for a complete machine. For the wider heading, see commercial fridges and display freezers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Process chillers, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 69 00 91 | 0% | None |
| Process chillers, not pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 69 00 99 | 0% | None |
| Non-household evaporators and condensers for chiller repairs | 8418 99 10 87 | 0% | None |
| Other refrigeration parts, pre-charged with HFCs | 8418 99 90 91 | 0% | None |
Specify cooling duty at the process conditions
State the process heat load, required leaving-fluid temperature, returning-fluid temperature, fluid composition and ambient conditions. Ask for a performance curve at these conditions rather than accepting the model name as proof of capacity. Specify air-cooled or water-cooled construction, pump flow and available pressure, reservoir arrangement, wetted materials, connections and space for maintenance.
Agree the supply voltage, frequency, phase, starting load, controller interface and alarm behaviour. Request the exact refrigerant and charge, component list, wiring diagram and English operating instructions. For machinery, the responsible person must ensure a declaration of conformity accompanies it; confirm the applicable conformity marking requirements with the relevant authority. Establish the applicable ecodesign scope for the model and request supporting technical documentation and its declaration of conformity.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 compact process chillers, not pre-charged with HFCs under 8418 69 00 99, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,000, so it is £1,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Cooling performance: run the production machine with a representative heat load and agreed fluid; record inlet and outlet temperatures, flow, ambient conditions and electrical demand.
Hydraulic circuit: check pump operation, connection sizes, visible leaks, insulation, drain access and whether wetted materials match the agreed fluid.
Controls and protection: check temperature control, low-flow response, alarms, restart behaviour, wiring identification and the agreed remote interface.
Identity and arrival condition: match the nameplate, refrigerant charge and conformity documents to the shipped model. On arrival, inspect pipework, condenser fins, mounts and transit damage before commissioning. See quality inspection.
What goes wrong
A capacity figure measured with warmer process water or cooler ambient air can leave the machine undersized for your application. A pump selected without the site's pressure losses can produce inadequate flow even when the refrigeration circuit performs correctly. Require test conditions and acceptance criteria in the purchase specification.
Refrigerant substitutions can change the customs declaration and compliance checks. Obtain approval for component substitutions and review the final nameplate before dispatch. Do not treat a generic certificate covering another model as evidence for the delivered chiller; agree access to replacement pumps, sensors, controllers and service documentation.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on industrial chillers from China?
The selected heading 8418 chiller and parts lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. The complete machine's code depends on its specification and HFC charge.
Can I import an HFC-charged process chiller from China?
Check the refrigerant against product bans and confirm quota requirements with your customs broker. Where quota authorisations or delegations are required, you cannot import without sufficient coverage.
What cooling capacity should I specify?
Specify the heat load, leaving-fluid temperature, fluid mixture and ambient conditions. Request performance at those conditions, together with pump flow and available pressure.
What should I test before the chiller ships?
Test the production machine under the agreed heat load. Record temperatures, flow and electrical demand, then check leaks, alarms, low-flow protection and the model identity against its documents.
