Sourcing hot-rolled steel channels from China
Hot-rolled steel channels from China have UK duty outcomes of 0% to 50%: standard channels show 50%, with 0% available through the steel quota; clad channels show 0%. Confirm applicable declaration-of-performance and UKCA or CE marking requirements for structural channels with the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Cambridge China Bridge sources hot-rolled steel channels.

Channel height, processing and UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7216 covers angles, shapes and sections of iron or non-alloy steel. For standard hot-rolled channels, height determines the line: under 80 mm, from 80 mm to 220 mm, or over 220 mm. The table also includes the separate line for clad hot-rolled channels.
The supplied snapshot records 50% third-country duty for standard channels and 0% for the clad line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls on these lines. Our published steel-sections guide describes a 0% quota route for standard hot-rolled sections; official guidance confirms 50% outside quota. Ask your broker to confirm quota eligibility and availability before budgeting for 0%.
Confirm the commodity code using the section drawing, height, steel composition and processing history. Painting or galvanising should not be described as cladding without checking the classification. See the wider steel beams and sections guide for other profiles.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot-rolled channels under 80 mm high | 7216 10 00 00 | 50% | None |
| Hot-rolled channels from 80 mm to 220 mm high | 7216 31 10 00 | 50% | None |
| Hot-rolled channels over 220 mm high | 7216 31 90 00 | 50% | None |
| Clad hot-rolled channels, not otherwise further worked | 7216 99 00 10 | 0% | None |
Specify the channel profile and structural documents
Send a dimensioned cross-section showing depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, and whether the flange faces are parallel or tapered. Specify steel grade, length, straightness, dimensional tolerances and surface condition. Agree the inspection certificate, heat identification, bundle labels and loading method before ordering. Compare the actual drawing rather than accepting a supplier's nominal channel size.
For structural construction use in Great Britain, confirm with the Office for Product Safety and Standards which declaration-of-performance and UKCA or CE marking requirements apply, using our published steel-sections guide as a starting point. CE marking continues to be accepted. Match any declared product and intended use to the channels ordered, and check that mill certificates identify the corresponding heats.
Our published guide also discusses the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism. Confirm its implementation timing and whether these steel lines are covered with HMRC or your customs broker. Ask the mill about emissions data before agreeing future supplies.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of hot-rolled channels under 7216 31 10 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 50% is £10,000. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £30,000, so it is £6,000. Import taxes total £16,000; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £10,000 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Documents: match bundle and piece heat markings to mill certificates, grade, chemistry and mechanical results; check structural performance documents against the ordered product.
Dimensions: measure depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, length and straightness against the agreed drawing and tolerances.
Surface: check for cracks, laps, rolled-in scale, rust and damaged flange edges; inspect any specified coating or cladding.
Arrival: reconcile bundle labels, piece counts and delivered lengths with the packing list; photograph bent channels, broken straps and moisture damage before moving the stock.

What goes wrong
A nominal channel designation hides different flange geometry or thickness, so sections do not fit the buyer's connections. Mixed heats break certificate traceability, and bent or twisted channels create fabrication problems. Approve the drawing and document sample before production, then measure the shipment using an agreed inspection checklist.
A budget based on 0% fails when the shipment cannot obtain quota and the 50% rate applies. Keep that duty scenario in the purchasing calculation, and have your broker check the applicable quota route before dispatch.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on hot-rolled channels from China?
The supplied snapshot shows 50% for standard hot-rolled channels and 0% for the clad line. A 0% steel-quota route may apply to standard channels; confirm eligibility and availability with your broker.
Which commodity code covers hot-rolled channels?
Standard channels use 7216 10 00 00 below 80 mm, 7216 31 10 00 from 80 mm to 220 mm, and 7216 31 90 00 above 220 mm. Composition and further processing can change the classification.
Do structural channels need CE or UKCA marking?
For structural construction use in Great Britain, use our published guide as a starting point and confirm applicable declaration-of-performance and UKCA or CE marking requirements with the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Check that any documents cover the ordered channels and intended use.
What should I specify when ordering steel channels?
Specify the cross-section drawing, grade, flange geometry, web and flange thickness, length, tolerances, straightness, surface finish and heat traceability. Agree mill documents and inspection checks before production.
