Rotor blade duty and tariff controls

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 November 2026, heading 8807 covers aircraft parts, with helicopter rotor blades within the propellers, rotors and parts branch. The relevant codes are 8807 10 00 20 and 8807 10 00 90. Main and tail rotor blades share these codes; the table repeats them to show the product applications.

Both relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches a DCMS Export Licence control. Official guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirement under that regime. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached export control applies to the transaction, especially for historic blades or onward exports.

The specified aircraft-fitting line carries end-use conditions, as explained in the published aircraft parts guide. Give your broker the blade drawing, intended aircraft and use before confirming the commodity code. The wider rotor and propeller family is covered in the aircraft propellers guide.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 November 2026.

Specify the blade and its aircraft application

State whether the order is for main or tail rotor blades, the helicopter model, part number, drawing revision, rotation direction and root attachment. Specify the material, surface protection, blade profile and the manufacturer's acceptance limits for dimensions, mass and balance. Agree whether blades are supplied individually or as a matched set.

For certified civil aircraft, confirm with the Civil Aviation Authority and the receiving maintenance organisation whether an approved source and an authorised release certificate from an approved production or maintenance organisation are required. Keep any required certificate with the blade. Ask the receiving maintenance organisation to review the proposed documents before ordering. For used blades, request service history, recorded repairs and remaining life information for its assessment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small replacement rotor blade shipment; values are hypothetical under 8807 10 00 90, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match each blade's part number and serial marking to the order and release certificate; keep its records together.

Root and profile: compare attachment holes, bushes, root geometry, blade profile and twist with the agreed drawing and inspection records.

Condition: check for dents, cracks, corrosion, coating damage and signs of composite separation; refer suspect blades to the receiving maintenance organisation.

Balance and packing: review mass and balance records against the agreed limits, check matched-set identification and inspect supports for transport damage. Agree the inspection scope using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A blade can resemble the required part while having a different root attachment, profile or drawing revision. Missing serial links and release paperwork also leave the buyer unable to establish which blade the documents cover. Before fitting parts to certified aircraft, ask the Civil Aviation Authority and the receiving maintenance organisation to confirm the required release documents.

Packaging can damage leading edges or allow a blade to flex against its supports. Keep suspect blades separate, photograph damage and ask the receiving maintenance organisation to assess them. Agree document review and packing acceptance before dispatch, rather than relying on a supplier's statement that a blade fits the helicopter.
