Sourcing Hardboard Sheets from China
Hardboard sheets from China carry a flat 6% UK duty across the listed fibreboard lines, with no additional trade remedy recorded. Timber due diligence applies when placing wood fibreboard on the Great Britain market. Specify the manufacturing process, density and finish before confirming the code. Cambridge China Bridge sources hardboard sheets.

Hardboard duty and classification
Heading 4411 covers fibreboard of wood or other ligneous materials, whether or not bonded with resins or other organic substances. Hardboard is made using a wet production process and has a smooth face and rough reverse in its unworked state. The table includes dense non-MDF fibreboard lines and thin MDF or HDF alternatives for comparison, rather than treating these products as interchangeable.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 20 October 2026, every listed line carries 6% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Fibreboard remains within the UK Timber Regulations: the business first placing it on the Great Britain market must carry out timber legality due diligence.
Give your broker the manufacturing process, density, thickness, surface covering and details of any perforation or other working. Confirm the commodity code before ordering; a supplier's description alone is insufficient. See the wider MDF and fibreboard guide for neighbouring products.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other dense fibreboard, raw and uncovered | 4411 92 10 00 | 6% | None |
| Other dense fibreboard, mechanically worked or surface covered | 4411 92 90 00 | 6% | None |
| Raw MDF sheets up to 5 mm, for comparison | 4411 12 10 00 | 6% | None |
| Other worked or covered HDF sheets up to 5 mm, for comparison | 4411 12 92 90 | 6% | None |
Specify the hardboard face, grade and intended use
Specify sheet dimensions, thickness tolerance, density, flatness, face smoothness and reverse texture. State whether the board is plain, oil-tempered, painted, coated or perforated. For perforated sheets, agree hole size, spacing and edge margins. Approve a sample for the intended cutting, fastening and finishing process.
For construction panels, confirm with the relevant construction-product authority whether EN 13986 applies and what declaration of performance, UKCA or CE marking, formaldehyde class and reaction-to-fire information are needed. Agree the intended use and request matching documentation. Obtain fibre sources, species and country of harvest for timber due diligence.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative container order of raw hardboard sheets, subject to code confirmation under 4411 92 10 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,600. Duty at 6% is £996. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,596, so it is £3,519.20. Import taxes total £4,515.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £996 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: measure thickness across sample sheets, then check length, width, squareness and bow against the agreed tolerances.
Faces and edges: compare smoothness, reverse texture and coating with the approved sample; check blisters, stains, chipped edges and damaged corners.
Use and paperwork: trial cutting and fastening, check perforation alignment where applicable, and match batch reports and construction documentation to the supplied grade.
Packing and arrival: inspect for dampness, mould and crushed bundles; check flat supports and edge protection, then store sheets flat and covered.

What goes wrong
Thin sheets can arrive bowed or with crushed corners after uneven stacking. Coated faces can show scratches or colour variation, while a rough reverse may be unsuitable for a visible backing panel. Check both faces on the approved sample and inspect sheets from inside bundles.
A quotation that uses hardboard and HDF interchangeably leaves the process and grade unclear. Require the mill to describe the actual board and finish, then confirm classification separately. A moisture-resistant claim should be supported by agreed batch testing rather than appearance alone.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on hardboard sheets from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 6% on every heading 4411 line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Confirm the exact sheet code before shipment.
Are hardboard and HDF the same product?
Do not assume they are interchangeable. Specify the manufacturing process, density, face and reverse texture, finish and intended use, then approve a sample.
Do hardboard sheets need CE or UKCA marking?
For panels used in construction, confirm with the relevant construction-product authority whether EN 13986 applies and whether a declaration of performance and UKCA or CE marking are required. Match the paperwork to the intended use.
What timber information should I obtain from the factory?
Obtain fibre sources, species and country of harvest. Confirm with the relevant timber-regulation authority whether the wood fibreboard falls within the UK Timber Regulations and what timber legality due diligence the business first placing it on the Great Britain market needs to carry out.
