Sourcing Hall sensors from China

Hall effect sensor components classified as semiconductor-based transducers carry 0% UK duty from China. Government guidance distinguishes business-to-business components from finished equipment for hazardous-substance rules. Confirm the device function and retain material evidence. Cambridge China Bridge sources Hall effect sensor components.

Duty on Hall effect sensor components

Heading 8541 covers semiconductor devices, including semiconductor-based transducers. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, code 8541 51 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for this line. Import VAT is 20%.

The table shows purchasing variants within the same semiconductor-based transducer line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Confirm the commodity code using the datasheet, internal construction and supplied form. Do not assume a complete sensing instrument or board uses the component code. For the wider heading, see optocouplers.

Specify magnetic response and component status

Specify linear, switching or latching behaviour; magnetic polarity; operate and release points; sensitivity; output interface; supply range; temperature range; and package dimensions. Agree the sensing axis, pin layout and magnet arrangement used for acceptance testing. Identify the actual manufacturer and exact ordering designation, including packaging and temperature grade.

Government guidance says component parts sold business-to-business are outside the Great Britain hazardous-substance rules, but a final assembly placed on the market must comply. Obtain material declarations and supporting test information for the intended assembly. Waste electrical equipment guidance also distinguishes components supplied to a business for building a finished product from finished equipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative replenishment batch of packaged Hall effect transducers under 8541 51 00 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £50 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,050. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,050, so it is £610. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match package markings, manufacturer designation, batch records and delivery documents to the approved sample.

Magnetic response: test polarity, sensing axis, switching and release behaviour or linear response using the agreed magnet fixture.

Electrical behaviour: check pin layout, supply current, output loading and temperature behaviour against the agreed datasheet.

Packing: inspect leads, package damage, reel orientation and protection against electrostatic discharge and moisture. Preserve batch separation for quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A matching package does not establish electrical interchangeability. A latching device can remain active after the magnet is removed, while a switching device may release. Different magnetic polarity, pin layout or output behaviour can stop an otherwise sound board working. Approve substitutions through circuit and magnet-fixture testing before accepting them.

Relabelled parts and mixed batches undermine traceability. Keep the approved sample, supplier records and incoming test results together. Do not treat a generic material declaration as evidence for an unidentified sensor batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on Hall effect sensors from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for semiconductor-based transducers under 8541 51 00 00, with no trade remedies, suspensions or attached controls. Import VAT is 20%.

Are loose Hall sensor components covered by hazardous-substance rules?

Government guidance excludes component parts sold business-to-business from the Great Britain rules. A final assembly placed on the market must comply, including its components.

Can I replace a Hall sensor with another in the same package?

Check magnetic polarity, sensing axis, pin layout, supply range and output behaviour. Test the proposed replacement in your circuit with the intended magnet before approving it.

What should I ask the Chinese supplier to provide?

Ask for the exact manufacturer designation, datasheet, batch traceability, material evidence and magnetic test results tied to the agreed fixture and acceptance criteria.
