Sourcing Hafnium Metal Bars from China

Hafnium metal bars from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant hafnium lines, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm whether the stock is unwrought or worked, and assess UK REACH registration before importing a substance for the first time. Cambridge China Bridge sources hafnium metal bars.

Hafnium bar classification and duty

Heading 8112 covers hafnium and other listed minor metals and their articles. For hafnium bars, distinguish unwrought stock under 8112 31 00 00 from worked material under 8112 39 00 00. The table repeats the worked-material code for different bar shapes; these are not separate tariff lines. See the wider minor-metals guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, both hafnium lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Import VAT at 20% still applies. The unwrought line also lists import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only to waste; for Chinese goods entered on that line, ask your customs broker to confirm the attached control and required documentation.

Give your broker the composition, manufacturing process and condition as supplied to confirm the commodity code. A supplier's description of 'bar' alone does not explain whether it is unwrought stock or worked material.

Specify hafnium chemistry and bar condition

Specify the hafnium content and whether the quoted purity includes zirconium. Agree separate limits for zirconium, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon and metallic impurities, with the laboratory method and reporting basis. Request a certificate of analysis tied to the heat or batch, rather than a generic purity statement.

Define round or rectangular section, length, dimensional tolerances, straightness, surface finish and machining allowance. State the required processing condition and end use. Agree how independent samples will be taken and retained. Before importing hafnium as a substance for the first time, assess whether UK REACH registration is required.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of worked hafnium bars; values are hypothetical under 8112 39 00 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £60,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £60,800, so it is £12,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Chemistry: compare the batch certificate with the agreed impurity limits, including zirconium; independently test a retained sample using the agreed method.

Dimensions: measure section and length, check straightness along the bar, and confirm sufficient machining allowance.

Surface: inspect for cracks, seams, dents and contamination before accepting bars for machining.

Traceability and packing: match each bundle to its batch certificate, reconcile net weight, and check that separators and restraints prevent bars rubbing or bending in transit.

What goes wrong

A purity statement can conceal a different treatment of zirconium from the buyer's specification. Certificates can refer to another batch, and surface damage or bent bars can consume the machining allowance. Put the reporting basis, batch identification and acceptance checks in the purchase order.

Do not accept a generic certificate as evidence for the delivered bars. Hold material with mismatched identification or chemistry pending investigation, and retain samples and photographs so the supplier can investigate the actual batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on hafnium bars from China?

Both relevant hafnium lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT at 20% still applies.

Which commodity code applies to hafnium bars?

Worked hafnium bars fall within 8112 39 00 00; unwrought stock is covered by 8112 31 00 00. Ask your broker to confirm the classification from the manufacturing process and supplied condition.

What should a hafnium bar certificate show?

The heat or batch identity, hafnium content, treatment of zirconium in the purity calculation, agreed impurity results and analytical method.

Does importing hafnium need UK REACH registration?

Assess whether registration is required before importing hafnium as a substance for the first time. Do not treat the tariff code or a supplier's purity certificate as the answer.
