Grooved tram rails carry 0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7302 covers iron or steel railway and tramway track construction material. New grooved rails fall under 7302 10 40 00. The accompanying crossing pieces, fish-plates, sole plates and other track fittings in this table have separate commodity codes.

The supplied tariff data records 0% duty on Chinese goods for every row shown here. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Other new rail profiles can have different duties, so do not classify a rail by its intended tramway use alone.

Confirm the profile and goods description using finding your commodity code, and see the wider rails and track fittings guide. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether and when these goods fall within UK CBAM scope. Keep records even if you do not need to register, and request supplier emissions data. See the UK CBAM guide.

Specify the groove and matching track interfaces

Attach the operator's rail section drawing to the enquiry. Specify groove width and depth, running head, guiding lip, web and foot dimensions, steel grade, hardness, heat treatment, rail length and straightness tolerances. Identify whether lengths are supplied straight, curved or drilled, and define the end preparation.

Agree the applicable grooved rail standard, inspection certificate type and operator acceptance documents before production. Specify compatible fish-plates, base plates and clips against the same drawing. Ask the mill to identify each heat and link its test results to the delivered lengths.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative repair batch of new grooved tram rails for a small track contractor under 7302 10 40 00, invoiced at £32,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £36,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £36,000, so it is £7,200. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Groove geometry: measure groove width and depth, head and guiding lip against the agreed section drawing; check compatibility with the operator's wheel profile.

Rail alignment: check straightness, twist, curvature where ordered, end squareness and drilled hole positions before dispatch and again on arrival.

Mill records: match heat numbers and rail markings to chemistry, tensile and hardness results for the grade and heat treatment ordered.

Surface and handling: inspect the running head and groove for cracks, laps, seams and handling damage; check supports and restraints for bent lengths.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking section can have the wrong groove or guiding lip for the tramway's wheel profile. Fish-plates and clips can fit the nominal rail size but fail to match its actual section. Settle these interfaces on drawings and inspect production samples before releasing the shipment.

Long lengths can bend during loading or unloading, and mill certificates can arrive without a traceable link to the rails supplied. Agree handling supports and document matching in the purchase order. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.
