Sourcing glass carboys from China
Glass carboys from China carry 0% ordinary UK duty across the relevant lines. Containers below 2.5 litres can also attract provisional anti-dumping duty at 52.97% for unnamed exporters. Carboys used to package food must be suitable for food use. Cambridge China Bridge sources glass carboys.

UK duty on glass carboys
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7010 covers glass containers of a kind used to convey or pack goods, including carboys, and glass closures. For ordinary carboys with nominal capacity of 2.5 litres or more, the relevant line is 7010 90 31 00. The smaller beverage-bottle rows apply only where the product fits that description.
Ordinary duty is 0% on the selected lines. The larger-carboy and standalone glass-closure lines show no trade remedy, suspension or attached import control. The selected smaller-bottle lines show 52.97% residual provisional anti-dumping duty and registration. Named exporters may qualify for lower rates with the signed invoice declaration. A guarantee is required during the provisional remedy. Imports within the registration scope are registered; ask your customs broker to confirm how the control and guarantee apply to your shipment.
Confirm nominal capacity, intended contents, manufacturing method and whether closures are imported separately before choosing the commodity code. A supplier's description of a vessel as a demijohn does not settle classification. See the glass beverage bottle guide for the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glass carboys for packing goods, nominal capacity 2.5 litres or more | 7010 90 31 00 | 0% | None |

| Coloured beverage bottles, including small demijohns, 1 litre to under 2.5 litres | 7010 90 51 00 | 0% | 52.97% residual anti-dumping (provisional) |
| Separately imported glass stoppers, lids and other closures | 7010 20 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the carboy, neck and intended contents
State nominal capacity and working fill level separately, glass colour and composition, body dimensions, neck opening, stopper seating surface and the intended liquid. Specify whether the order includes a bung, airlock adaptor, carrying basket or protective sleeve. Keep an approved sample of the complete assembly and agree dimensional tolerances with the factory.
If you package food yourself, you must use packaging suitable for food use. For beverage carboys, ask for evidence covering the actual glass and food-contact closure under your intended storage and cleaning conditions. Treat a supplier's food-grade claim as a starting point for checking the evidence. Our testing and certification service can help define the checks.
For fermentation, tell the factory how gas will escape and agree instructions for the complete assembly. Ask for evidence before accepting claims about pressure resistance, hot filling or cleaning temperature. Specify protective packing around the body and neck, with separation between vessels.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 empty glass carboys, each with nominal capacity above 2.5 litres; FOB and freight figures are illustrative under 7010 90 31 00, invoiced at £3,200 free on board, with £1,404 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,604. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,604, so it is £920.80. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Capacity and fit: measure sampled vessels against the drawing, check the working fill level and try the supplied bung or stopper across the batch.
Glass condition: inspect the mouth, shoulder and base for chips, cracks, inclusions and uneven walls; check that the vessel stands securely.
Assembly and cleanliness: check the seal and adaptor fit, basket support, sleeve coverage and internal cleanliness against the approved sample.
Packing and arrival: open packed cartons, check neck protection and dividers, record broken vessels and loose glass, and keep damaged stock apart for assessment. Use the inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong
A neck that varies between moulds can leave bungs loose or difficult to remove. Thin shoulders, chipped mouths and unsupported necks can cause losses during handling. A carrying basket may conceal damage, so inspect the glass separately as well as the assembled vessel.
A sample tested with a different closure or cleaning process does not establish how your assembly performs. Confirm the actual components and intended use before production. Capacity errors can also move a smaller vessel into a line carrying provisional anti-dumping duty, so check the declared nominal capacity before dispatch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on glass carboys from China?
The selected lines carry 0% ordinary duty. Carboys of 2.5 litres or more show no trade remedy; the selected smaller-bottle lines also show 52.97% residual provisional anti-dumping duty.
Can I use imported glass carboys for wine or cider?
If you package food yourself, the packaging must be suitable for food use. Check evidence for the actual glass, bung and intended contact conditions, and trial the complete assembly.
Can glass carboys hold pressure during fermentation?
Do not assume pressure resistance from appearance or glass thickness. Ask for evidence covering the complete assembly and agree how fermentation gas will escape.
How should glass carboys be packed for shipping?
Agree body separation, neck protection and secure support inside each carton. Check packed samples before shipment and inspect arrivals for chips, cracks and loose glass.
