Sourcing generator stator coils from China

Ordinary generator stator winding coils from China normally carry 2% UK duty. The 0% suspensions within heading 8503 are conditional, not a general coil exemption. Confirm classification and component conformity status before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources generator stator winding coils.

UK duty on generator stator winding coils

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8503 covers parts suitable solely or principally for the motors and generators of headings 8501 or 8502. For separately supplied generator stator winding coils, consider 8503 00 98 99 and confirm the actual construction. The table also includes accompanying cores and cast parts; these are separate goods, not alternative codes for the same coil.

The ordinary duty on goods from China is 2%. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. The 0% suspensions cover specified products, while authorised-use relief concerns manufacture of rotors for offshore wind turbines. Neither is a general exemption for generator stator coils. Budget for 2% unless your broker confirms eligibility for a particular relief.

The tariff attaches supplementary-unit import reporting to 8503 00 98 99. HMRC says the supplementary-unit field is required only where the commodity code requires it; ask your broker to confirm the applicable unit and declaration treatment for your China shipment. Confirm the commodity code using the drawing and intended use. For the wider heading, see motor parts, stators and rotors.

Coil geometry, copper and insulation

Send a winding drawing with the generator model, slot geometry, coil pitch, turns, conductor material and cross-section, parallel conductors, end-turn envelope and lead positions. State whether you need loose formed coils, matched winding sets or coils already installed in a stator. Agree which dimensions are measured before and after insulation and impregnation.

Specify the insulation materials, thermal class, slot protection, resin system and curing process. Agree resistance, insulation-resistance, dielectric and surge-test methods with the generator manufacturer or repair engineer, including test conditions and acceptance criteria. Approve a sample against a slot gauge or the intended core before releasing bulk production.

Separately marketed components can constitute finished products in their own right under official electrical-equipment guidance. Do not assume that calling a shipment a generator part settles its conformity status. Confirm the assessment for the actual supply arrangement through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 formed generator stator winding coils for a repair workshop under 8503 00 98 99, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 2% is £430. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,930, so it is £4,386. Import taxes total £4,816; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £430 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Conductor: check material certificates, conductor dimensions and a cut sample against the approved copper specification; compare coil resistance at the agreed temperature.

Fit: check straight sections, coil pitch, end-turn clearance and lead orientation against the drawing and slot gauge; inspect insulation for damage caused by forming.

Insulation: check wrapping, resin coverage and curing records; review agreed electrical test results matched to the supplied coil or winding set.

Arrival: check coil identifiers, matched-set packing, bent ends, crushed insulation and moisture damage before installation. Use the inspection guide to agree how findings are recorded.

What goes wrong

A coil can fit the slot but still have the wrong turns, conductor section or lead arrangement. Substituted conductor material changes resistance, while excessive end-turn size can prevent assembly. Keep an approved winding drawing and sample, and require written approval before the factory changes materials or geometry.

Insulation can crack during forming or suffer abrasion during packing. Uneven impregnation, incomplete curing and damp storage can undermine electrical performance. Compare arrival checks with factory test records and investigate discrepancies before fitting the coils.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on generator stator coils from China?

Ordinary coils considered under 8503 00 98 99 carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Conditional suspensions are not a general coil exemption.

Are generator stator coils classified as winding wire?

Distinguish formed generator coils from winding wire supplied for manufacture. Give your broker the drawing, construction and intended use before confirming the code.

Do generator stator coils need CE or UKCA marking?

Confirm the status of the supplied component. Official guidance says separately marketed components can be finished products in their own right, so a parts description alone does not settle marking.

What should I check before fitting replacement stator coils?

Check slot fit, coil pitch, turns, conductor section, lead orientation and insulation condition. Match the agreed resistance and insulation test records to the delivered coils.
