Sourcing generator rotor rings from China

Generator rotor retaining rings from China normally pay 2% UK duty; qualifying offshore wind rotor manufacture can receive 0% under authorised use. Match the ring's material and function to its code, and agree fit, material traceability and crack testing before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources generator rotor retaining rings.

Retaining-ring duty and conditional relief

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8503 covers parts suitable solely or principally for electric motors and generators. Non-magnetic retaining rings under 8503 00 10 90 carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no attached import control on this line.

The ring line has a 0% suspension under authorised use for manufacturing rotors for incorporation in offshore wind turbines used in offshore wind energy production. Goods entered under authorised use must serve their prescribed purpose. A replacement ring for another generator application does not qualify merely because it shares the code. Confirm eligibility and customs supervision arrangements with your broker before claiming relief.

The table includes other generator-part categories and a rotor-core comparison line; these are not interchangeable retaining-ring codes. Send the drawing, material specification, manufacturing route and intended generator use to your broker to confirm the commodity code. See the motor parts, stators and rotors guide for the wider heading.

Specify the ring material and rotor fit

Describe a generator rotor retaining ring, rather than a general retaining ring or circlip. Supply the approved drawing with bore, outside diameter, axial length, wall profile, seating surfaces, grooves, radii and surface finish. Have the generator engineer approve interference fit and assembly instructions before the factory starts machining.

Name the alloy, manufacturing route, heat treatment, mechanical properties and magnetic requirements. Agree how the factory will demonstrate each property, where test samples come from and how finished rings remain linked to their material heat. Specify ultrasonic and surface crack examinations, acceptance criteria and report traceability as purchase requirements.

For components supplied to a generator maker, confirm with HSE whether applicable UKCA or CE marking requirements concern the ring, the finished motor or machine, or both. Agree conformity responsibilities with the assembler. Use factory verification to check the supplier's forming, heat-treatment, machining and inspection capability against your ring specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A matched pair of non-magnetic generator rotor retaining rings, illustrative only under 8503 00 10 90, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 2% is £430. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,930, so it is £4,386. Import taxes total £4,816; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £430 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match each ring's identification to the drawing revision, material certificate, heat-treatment record and examination reports. Investigate missing links before accepting the shipment.

Geometry: measure bore size, roundness, outside diameter, concentricity, axial length and seating surfaces against the drawing. Record actual measurements rather than accepting a general pass stamp.

Material and defects: review chemistry, mechanical-property and magnetic test results against the agreed specification. Check that ultrasonic and surface examination reports identify the delivered rings and cover the agreed areas.

Arrival condition: inspect machined surfaces for corrosion, dents, scratches and damaged edges. Check that transport restraints protected the rings without loading critical surfaces. Agree the sampling and report format through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A ring can match the nominal dimensions yet have the wrong material, heat treatment or bore geometry. These discrepancies can compromise the specified fit and service performance. Mixed certificates, unapproved material substitutions and machining after the recorded inspection can also leave the delivered ring unsupported by its reports.

Do not accept cosmetic polishing as evidence that a crack indication has been resolved. Require the generator engineer to approve repair proposals and deviations, then agree any repeat examinations. Keep suspect rings separate until the engineer has reviewed the measurements, material records and defect reports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on generator rotor retaining rings from China?

Non-magnetic retaining rings under 8503 00 10 90 normally pay 2%. Qualifying offshore wind rotor manufacture has a conditional 0% authorised-use suspension.

Which commodity code covers non-magnetic generator retaining rings?

The supplied tariff lists non-magnetic retaining rings under 8503 00 10 90. Ask your broker to confirm the drawing, material and intended use before declaring that code.

Do generator rotor retaining rings need UKCA marking?

Confirm with HSE whether components supplied to a motor maker need their own UKCA or CE marking, and which marking requirements apply to the finished motor or machine. Confirm the supplied product's scope with the assembler.

What documents should I request from the retaining-ring factory?

Request material certificates, heat-treatment records, dimensional reports and agreed defect-examination results linked to each ring. Include the approved drawing revision and any engineer-approved deviations.
