2% duty and classification by function

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8468 covers soldering, brazing and welding machinery and apparatus other than those of heading 8515, plus gas-operated surface tempering equipment. Every supplied line carries 2% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control.

For a gas-heated iron, start by checking the other gas-operated apparatus line against its construction and function. A separate flame torch and separately imported parts need their own classification review. The table includes the wider heading's lines for context; they are not interchangeable codes for the same iron. See the gas welding torches and blowlamps guide.

Send the broker photographs, operating instructions, fuel details and the kit contents to confirm the commodity code. Describe whether the product solders through a heated tip or directly with a flame, and identify separately supplied accessories.

Specify the fuel system and soldering tip

Specify the intended fuel, refill nozzle compatibility, reservoir material, refill valve, ignition method and heat adjustment. Agree the tip shapes, tip attachment, replacement-tip supply, stand, protective cap and carrying case. State whether flame and hot-air attachments are included, and agree how the factory will demonstrate soldering performance on your intended joints.

For products intended for, or reasonably likely to be used by, consumers in Great Britain, the General Product Safety Regulations 2005 apply to relevant consumer safety. Such products must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Ask for model-specific safety evidence and clear English instructions covering refilling, ignition, shutdown and cooling.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 gas-heated soldering-iron kits under 8468 20 00 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £650 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,150. Duty at 2% is £63. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,213, so it is £642.60. Import taxes total £705.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £63 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fuel seals: have competent test staff check the reservoir, refill valve and shut-off valve using an agreed safe test method. Inspect for damaged seals and confirm the valve shuts fully.

Ignition and heat: check repeated ignition, adjustment and stable operation. Demonstrate solder flow on the agreed joint, and check that the tip remains securely attached.

Handling: check the stand supports the iron, the grip remains usable during the agreed test and the cap fits as described in the instructions. Inspect the case for pressure on the controls.

Contents and instructions: match tips and attachments to the approved sample. Check English warnings and operating instructions against the actual controls. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A sample may ignite well but reveal weak tip heating under a soldering load. Other faults to screen for include refill-valve leakage, unreliable ignition, loose tips and heat adjustment that changes during use. Test the soldering function rather than accepting a demonstration of the flame alone.

Accessory substitutions can leave replacement tips unusable or change the way heat reaches the joint. Keep an approved sample and a written component list, then compare production and arrival samples with both. Resolve leakage or unstable operation before releasing stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gas-heated soldering irons from China?

The supplied heading 8468 lines all carry 2% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control is listed. Confirm the exact line for the iron.

Is a gas-heated soldering iron classified like a blowtorch?

Check its construction and function. A heated-tip iron and a separate flame torch should not automatically share a code. Give the broker the instructions, photographs and kit contents.

What safety rule applies to consumer gas soldering irons?

In Great Britain, relevant consumer safety is covered by the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Consumer products must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use.

What should I ask the factory to test?

Ask for fuel-seal and shut-off checks, repeated ignition, stable heat adjustment, tip retention and soldering on your intended joint. Match the tested model and accessories to the order.
