UK duty on gas-fired pottery kilns

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 8417 covers non-electric industrial or laboratory furnaces and ovens. Gas-fired kilns for firing pottery fall within ceramic-product firing ovens and furnaces, code 8417 80 30 00. The kiln variants in the table share this code; they are not separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China throughout this heading, including parts under 8417 90 00 00. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the commodity code from the kiln's heating method, firing purpose and supplied configuration. Separately supplied components need their own classification assessment. For the wider heading, see industrial furnaces and ovens.

Specify the firing process and installation

Specify the pottery body and glaze, usable chamber dimensions, loading arrangement, working and maximum temperature, firing curve, temperature uniformity and required atmosphere. State whether firing is oxidising or reducing. Agree a loaded firing trial using representative ware, rather than accepting an empty-chamber temperature reading.

Specify fuel, available gas pressure, burner arrangement, flame supervision, purge sequence, safety shut-off, refractory lining, insulation, thermocouple positions and controller functions. Include flue connections, electrical supply, installation drawings, commissioning responsibilities and replacement components.

Kilns supplied as machinery must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with conformity documentation and marking. Confirm instruction language requirements with HSE and request English instructions. HSE guidance for craft studios says adequate ventilation should provide free air movement. Check the proposed kiln location and extraction arrangement before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One gas-fired shuttle pottery kiln, illustrative order under 8417 80 30 00, invoiced at £72,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £78,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £78,500, so it is £15,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Combustion controls: have the commissioning engineer check flame supervision, purge, safety shut-off and emergency stops against the agreed design.

Lining and casing: compare refractory and insulation with the drawings; check door seals, welds, burner openings and thermocouple locations. On arrival, inspect for displaced lining and transport cracks.

Firing performance: witness a representative loaded firing, record temperatures across the load and compare the fired ware, atmosphere control and fuel consumption with the agreed acceptance method.

Documents and packing: match the kiln identity to its conformity documents, English manual, wiring and gas diagrams. Check the packing and lifting arrangement against the delivery plan. Use a written inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A kiln can reach its set temperature while firing unevenly across shelves. Poor burner placement, draught control or door sealing can produce inconsistent glaze and body results. Agree acceptance on representative fired ware and recorded chamber performance.

Refractory damage, unsuitable gas components and incomplete installation drawings can delay commissioning. Agree responsibility for the gas train, flue, controls and site commissioning before shipment, and photograph the lining before packing and after delivery.
