Sourcing fused quartz UV lamp sleeves from China

Fused quartz UV lamp sleeves classified under heading 7020 carry 0% UK duty from China, with no duty variation across the heading. Confirm that the sleeve belongs in this residual glass heading before ordering, then agree UV transmission and seal dimensions. Cambridge China Bridge sources fused quartz UV lamp sleeves.

Zero duty, subject to classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all lines of heading 7020 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. This heading covers other articles of glass. Other fused quartz or fused silica articles fall under 7020 00 10 90, subject to confirmation of the actual product.

The table shows sleeve configurations within the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Heading 7020 is residual: lighting glass and laboratory glassware have their own headings. Give your broker the material description, drawing, intended use and details of any attached components. Use the commodity code guide, and see fused quartz furnace tubes for the wider heading.

The tariff attaches import and export controls on cat and dog fur to this line. HMRC says imports and exports of that fur and products made from it are banned, including commercial imports from China. Specify plain quartz sleeves without fur components and ask your customs broker to confirm the declaration treatment of the attached control.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Quartz grade, UV transmission and seal fit

Specify fused quartz grade, purity, hydroxyl content, outside and inside diameters, wall thickness, length and straightness. Define whether the ends are open, closed, domed or flanged, with the sealing surfaces shown on a drawing. Ask for a batch material certificate and agree limits for bubbles, inclusions, scratches and chips.

Agree the required UV transmission at the lamp's operating wavelengths and the test method, including sample thickness. A clear-looking sample does not establish optical performance. Match the sleeve to the lamp, chamber, seals and cleaning method, and agree how the supplier will demonstrate fit and leak resistance in the intended assembly.

For drinking-water treatment, ask the system operator to identify the evidence needed for the replacement sleeve and any seals or coatings before accepting a substitute. Keep optical performance evidence separate from evidence of suitability for water contact. If supplied as a consumer product, confirm the applicable general product safety requirements with the relevant authority.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 100 bespoke replacement UV lamp sleeves, illustrative order under 7020 00 10 90, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,200, so it is £3,240. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material and optics: match batch identification to the material certificate and transmission report. Inspect against the agreed bubble, inclusion and surface-defect limits.

Dimensions and seals: measure diameters, wall thickness, length, straightness and end geometry against the drawing. Trial-fit samples using the intended seals and chamber.

Stress and damage: inspect for cracks and chipped sealing edges, examine residual stress with a polariscope, and agree a thermal shock test suited to service conditions.

Packing and arrival: check individual protection, separation between sleeves and support around closed ends. Record damaged cartons and retain batch identification during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

The sleeve fits the lamp but leaks at the chamber because the sealing diameter, end finish or flange geometry differs from the drawing. Chips hidden beneath a seal can become cracks during installation. Check the complete interface rather than accepting length and outside diameter alone.

A supplier substitutes a different quartz grade or provides a generic transmission report that does not identify the delivered batch. Bubbles, inclusions and surface contamination can undermine optical performance, while unsupported ends break in transit. Approve the material evidence, sample fit and packed-carton trial before releasing the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on quartz UV lamp sleeves from China?

For sleeves confirmed under 7020 00 10 90, the supplied tariff record shows 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension.

Which commodity code covers fused quartz UV sleeves?

7020 00 10 90 is the candidate line for other fused quartz or fused silica articles. Ask your broker to confirm classification from the drawing, material and intended use.

What should I ask a quartz sleeve factory to provide?

A batch material certificate, UV transmission evidence, a dimensioned drawing and agreed defect limits. Check end geometry and sealing surfaces against your actual chamber.

Can I use a replacement quartz sleeve in drinking-water equipment?

Ask the system operator to confirm the evidence needed for the sleeve, seals and coatings. Check water-contact suitability as well as optical performance and fit.
