Duty and classification for furnace tubes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 20 October 2026, the listed heading 7020 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension recorded. Semiconductor diffusion and oxidation reactor tubes have a specific line; other fused quartz or fused silica articles have a separate residual line. Repeated codes in the table distinguish uses within the same tariff line.

The other fused quartz line carries import and export controls on cat and dog fur. Official guidance bans imports and exports of that fur and products made from it. For a furnace tube shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control is addressed in the declaration; do not treat it as a ban on quartz.

Confirm the material, finished article and furnace application using the commodity code guide. Heading 7020 covers other glass articles; laboratory glassware has its own heading. See the wider glass articles guide for the broader product family.

Specify the quartz grade and furnace fit

Give the factory a drawing covering inside and outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, end finish and sealing surfaces. Specify fused quartz or fused silica explicitly, with agreed purity, metallic impurity, hydroxyl, bubble and inclusion limits. Request a material certificate tied to the production batch.

Describe the furnace atmosphere, operating temperature, heating and cooling cycle, supports and seals. Agree sample thermal cycling under conditions that match the intended service. Where more specific product safety law does not apply, workplace article supply duties include safe-use information and testing or examination necessary for compliance. Obtain handling, installation, cleaning and operating instructions for the supplied tube.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of custom replacement fused quartz furnace tubes under 7020 00 10 90, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £16,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £16,200, so it is £3,240. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match batch identification to the material certificate; check purity and hydroxyl results against the agreed specification.

Dimensions: measure diameters, wall thickness, length and straightness; check ends and sealing surfaces against the drawing.

Glass condition: inspect for cracks, chips, bubbles and inclusions; examine residual stress on samples and record thermal-cycle failures.

Packing: check individual protection, end cushioning and separation between tubes; inspect again after the agreed packed-carton drop test. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A tube can match the nominal diameter yet fail to fit because its wall varies, it bows or its ends are poorly finished. Chips at sealing surfaces and residual stress can turn an apparently sound delivery into a failure during installation or heating.

A high-purity description without batch evidence leaves impurities, hydroxyl content and inclusions unresolved. Approve the material evidence and sample performance before bulk production, then check the delivered batch rather than relying on the original sample.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on fused quartz furnace tubes from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for the relevant heading 7020 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded.

Which commodity code covers quartz furnace tubes?

7020 00 05 00 covers the specified semiconductor diffusion and oxidation reactor tubes. Other fused quartz or fused silica articles fall under 7020 00 10 90, subject to checking the finished product.

What should I ask for on the material certificate?

Ask for batch identification, the agreed purity and metallic impurity results, and hydroxyl content where the application depends on it. Match the certificate to the supplied tubes.

How do I check furnace tubes when they arrive?

Check packing damage, cracks, chips, dimensions, straightness and sealing surfaces. Match batch records to certificates and test samples against the agreed thermal cycle.
