Duty on forestry axes

Heading 8201 covers agricultural, horticultural and forestry hand tools. Forestry axes fall within 8201 40 00 00, covering axes, billhooks and similar hewing tools. The table distinguishes axe types sharing this commodity line. For other tools in the heading, see the garden hand tools guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, forestry axes from China carried 0% duty. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure, suspension or attached import control for this line. Import VAT is normally 20%; see the import duty and VAT guide.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual product and how it is supplied before shipment, especially when an order also includes separate handles or other forestry tools.

Specify the axe head and handle together

State whether the axe is for felling, limbing or splitting. Agree the head profile, edge angle, steel grade, heat treatment, hardness, head weight and handle length. Approve a sample using timber representative of the intended work, and record the acceptance criteria in the order.

For wooden handles, specify the timber, grain direction, finish and wedge arrangement. For composite handles, agree the moulding and head attachment. Specify a fitted blade sheath and packaging that restrains the head. Consumer axes supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use.

Axes must not be sold to anyone under 18. Before online resale, review age-checking and delivery arrangements with your adviser.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 450 forestry axes, illustrative order only under 8201 40 00 00, invoiced at £4,500 free on board, with £450 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,950. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,950, so it is £990. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Head and edge: check the profile and grind against the approved sample, measure hardness against the agreed specification, and look for cracks, chips and uneven sharpening.

Handle and fixing: check wooden handles for cross grain, knots near the head and splits; inspect wedges and attachment points, then check for head movement after the agreed sample use test.

Cutting performance: test samples on representative timber, recording edge damage, handle movement and whether the head cuts or splits as intended.

Sheath and packing: check that the sheath stays fitted, the edge cannot contact the carton, and labels match the contents. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

An axe can look correct while its heat treatment is wrong. A soft edge rolls or blunts; a brittle edge chips. A loose head, poorly seated wedge or cross-grained wooden handle can turn a cutting test into a safety failure. Compare production samples with the approved sample rather than accepting appearance alone.

Loose packing lets heads rub through sheaths and damage handles in transit. On arrival, inspect for exposed edges, rust, cracked handles and head movement before releasing stock. Hold suspect goods apart while the factory investigates the affected batch.
