Sourcing food-grade rice bran oil from China
Food-grade rice bran oil from China normally carries 6% UK duty when crude and fluid, or 8% when refined and fluid; qualifying small-pack solid fractions carry 12%. Cooking oils must meet applicable food standards, and organic imports need consignment paperwork. Cambridge China Bridge sources food-grade rice bran oil.

Rice bran oil duty depends on processing and form
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 November 2026, heading 1515 covers fixed vegetable or microbial fats and oils and their fractions, whether refined or not, but not chemically modified. Food-grade fluid rice bran oil falls within the residual other-oil lines: crude oil carries 6% duty from China and refined oil 8%. Small-pack solid fractions carry 12%; those rows concern solid fractions, rather than ordinary liquid cooking oil.
The supplied tariff records show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines. The refined-fluid line has a 0.00 % suspension restricted to specified arachidonic-acid or docosahexaenoic-acid-rich oils; do not assume ordinary rice bran oil qualifies. The tariff also attaches organic, CITES and waste import controls, plus CITES and waste export controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm their application to your shipment.
Classify from the actual processing, physical form, pack size and intended food use. Confirm the commodity code before shipment. Our sesame oil and tung oil guide covers the wider heading. The worked order is illustrative, using refined fluid rice bran oil rather than a solid fraction.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Refined food-grade rice bran oil, fluid | 1515 90 99 99 | 8% | None |
| Crude edible solid rice bran oil fractions, packs not exceeding 1 kg | 1515 90 51 00 | 12% | None |
| Other edible solid rice bran oil fractions, packs not exceeding 1 kg | 1515 90 91 00 | 12% | None |
Specify refining, freshness and edible packaging
State whether you want crude oil for further processing or refined oil for food manufacture, catering or retail. Agree the refining and deodorisation process, colour, odour, flavour, clarity, fatty acid profile, acid value and peroxide value. Request batch-specific results and retain an approved sample. Specify pure rice bran oil if blends are unacceptable, together with packaging, storage conditions and remaining shelf life at delivery.
Cooking oils must meet applicable food hygiene and compositional standards; a health certificate is not normally needed. Food-contact packaging is controlled by UK legislation. For an organic shipment from China into Great Britain, obtain a consignment certificate of inspection and check the exporter’s control body and export country against the non-UK organic registers.
CITES permits concern listed specimens, including plant derivatives; confirm how the tariff flag applies to the declared botanical source with your broker. If material is waste subject to notification controls, the exporter must seek consent through the dispatch country’s competent authority. Keep any proposed waste shipment separate from your edible-oil purchase specification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of refined food-grade rice bran oil in sealed drums under 1515 90 99 99, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,500. Duty at 8% is £1,560. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,060, so it is £4,212. Import taxes total £5,772; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,560 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the batch, supplier documents and fatty acid results to the agreed rice bran oil specification; investigate indications of blending.
Freshness: compare odour, colour and clarity with the approved sample, and check acid and peroxide results against your agreed acceptance limits.
Packaging: inspect drum cleanliness, closures, tamper seals and leaks; obtain evidence that the container and any liner suit edible oil.
Documents: reconcile batch references, declared processing, net contents and storage instructions across packs and paperwork; check organic documents before dispatch if buying organic.

What goes wrong
A refined sample can be followed by a shipment with a different refining process or an undeclared blend. Heat exposure and poor sealing can leave rancid odours or elevated acid and peroxide results. Retain samples from the approved lot and arriving shipment, and agree laboratory checks before releasing disputed stock.
Crude oil intended for further processing can be mistaken for oil ready for catering or retail. Small-pack solid fractions can also be declared as ordinary fluid oil, giving the wrong duty. Confirm the specification and code together, and resolve missing organic paperwork before dispatch.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
