Sourcing Avocado Oil from China
Avocado oil from China carries UK duty of 2% to 8% across the relevant liquid-oil lines: edible crude oil pays 6% and refined oil 8%. Food labelling must be accurate and not misleading, so agree the oil's identity and processing before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources avocado oil.

Avocado oil duty by processing and use
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 1515 covers other fixed vegetable or microbial fats and oils, whether refined or not, but not chemically modified. The relevant liquid avocado oil lines carry 6% for crude edible oil and 8% for refined edible oil. Separate technical or industrial lines excluding food manufacture carry 2% for crude oil and 4% for other oil.
The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty on these lines. The refined edible line has a 0.00 % suspension limited to oils meeting specified arachidonic acid or docosahexaenoic acid composition conditions; do not assume ordinary avocado oil qualifies. The selected lines attach CITES and waste import and export controls, and the edible lines also attach organic import controls.
Confirm the commodity code using the processing description, composition, physical form and intended use. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements attached to your consignment, including the basis for using an industrial line. For other oils within this heading, see the grapeseed oil guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crude liquid avocado oil for food use | 1515 90 59 00 | 6% | None |
| Refined liquid avocado oil for food use | 1515 90 99 99 | 8% | None |
| Crude avocado oil for technical or industrial use, excluding food manufacture | 1515 90 40 00 | 2% | None |
| Refined avocado oil for technical or industrial use, excluding food manufacture | 1515 90 60 00 | 4% | None |
Specify avocado identity and processing
Specify pure avocado oil or disclose any blend, and distinguish cold-pressed, unrefined and refined products. Record the fruit origin separately from the Chinese pressing, refining or packing site. Agree colour, flavour, fatty acid profile, acid value, peroxide value, moisture, sediment, packaging and storage conditions against an approved sample. Ask for batch analysis and agree independent testing before shipment.
Food labelling must be accurate and not misleading. Match purity, processing and origin claims to supplier records and test evidence. Review the proposed retail label before printing, including the product description, business details, date marking and storage instructions.
Organic avocado oil from China entering Great Britain needs a certificate of inspection for each consignment. Check the proposed certification route with your organic control body before ordering. CITES permits are required for listed species; confirm with your broker whether the tariff control applies to your oil. If goods are waste subject to notification controls, the exporter must apply for consent through the competent authority in the dispatch country.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5 tonnes of refined edible avocado oil in sealed drums under 1515 90 99 99, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £19,500. Duty at 8% is £1,560. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,060, so it is £4,212. Import taxes total £5,772; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,560 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match batch numbers to production records and analysis, and test the fatty acid profile for consistency with the agreed avocado oil specification.
Freshness: compare odour, flavour and colour with the approved sample, and check acid and peroxide values against the agreed acceptance limits.
Packing: inspect drum cleanliness, seals, leakage and damage on arrival; retain sealed samples from the delivered batch.
Documents: reconcile the invoice, oil description, processing records and label artwork; check organic documents where applicable. Set the scope using our inspection guide.

What goes wrong
An oil sold as pure avocado can contain another vegetable oil, while refined oil can be supplied against an unrefined sample. Colour alone cannot settle identity. A sample approved before production may also differ from the shipped batch, so connect the retained sample and laboratory results to the actual lot.
Heat, air exposure and poor seals can leave the oil rancid or leaking on arrival. Missing organic paperwork or an unsupported commodity description can also delay clearance. Agree acceptance criteria, inspect before dispatch and hold disputed batches for investigation rather than mixing them into existing stock.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on avocado oil from China?
Crude liquid edible avocado oil carries 6% and refined edible oil 8%. The separate industrial-use lines carry 2% for crude oil and 4% for other oil, excluding food manufacture.
Is edible avocado oil subject to import VAT?
Confirm your product's VAT treatment with HMRC; see UK import duty and VAT.
Can I import organic avocado oil from China?
For Great Britain, each organic consignment needs a certificate of inspection. Check the certification route with your organic control body before ordering.
How do I check avocado oil is genuine?
Obtain batch-linked production records and independent fatty acid profile testing. Compare freshness results and the delivered oil with the approved sample; colour alone is insufficient.
