Sourcing fish sausages from China
Selected species-specific prepared-fish lines carry standard UK duties of 6% to 25% for China. Confirm the fish sausage recipe and classification before using a rate, and check the factory's export approval and border documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources fish sausages.

Fish sausage classification and UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 1604 covers prepared or preserved fish, caviar and caviar substitutes. Fish sausages need classification from their species, full recipe and processing method. The table gives candidate species-specific prepared-fish lines, rather than a confirmed code for every sausage: non-salmon salmonids carry 6%, bonito and chub mackerel 25%, and the selected other tuna line 20%.
The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Only the selected tuna line lists a suspension at 0.00%; its footnote excludes mixtures, preparations or products made up of different components containing these products. Do not assume a formulated fish sausage qualifies. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. See prepared fish balls and the wider heading for related products.
The selected lines attach veterinary, illegal fishing and organic import controls. Ask your customs broker to confirm the veterinary entry document, catch certificate and processing statement requirements for the exact Chinese shipment. For organic sausages, confirm the certificate of inspection and certification arrangements with your organic control body. The certificate of inspection is issued by the exporter's control body in the country of export.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Other trout and non-salmon salmonid preparations | 1604 20 30 90 | 6% | None |
| Bonito preparations | 1604 20 50 30 | 25% | None |
| Chub mackerel preparations | 1604 20 50 50 | 25% | None |
| Other tuna and related fish preparations | 1604 20 70 99 | 20% | None |
Specify the fish recipe, casing and storage
Specify the fish species and proportion, whether the base is washed fish mince, and every added starch, oil, seasoning and animal ingredient. Identify allergens in compound seasonings as well as the main recipe. Agree diameter, length, portion weight, colour, firmness and flavour against retained samples. State whether the casing is edible or must be removed, and whether the sausage is ready to eat or needs cooking.
Distinguish frozen, chilled and ambient products before approving packaging. Request processing records and evidence supporting the proposed shelf life and storage instructions. Ask APHA or your broker to confirm whether the establishment is approved to export fishery products from China to Great Britain, the pre-notification arrangements and the appropriate border control post. Ask your broker to confirm the applicable health certification and any China-specific testing declarations before shipment. Our factory verification service can support supplier checks.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-wholesaler order: 10 tonnes of frozen trout fish sausages, subject to classification and import eligibility under 1604 20 30 90, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £34,000. Duty at 6% is £2,040. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £36,040, so it is £7,208. Import taxes total £9,248; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £2,040 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step. This assumes the goods are standard-rated for VAT. Most food for human consumption is zero-rated, and animal feed can be too, in which case no import VAT is due, so check the rate for your product in HMRC's VAT Notice 701/14.
Inspection checklist
Recipe and texture: compare sampled sausages with the approved sample for fish flavour, firmness, starchiness, colour, bone fragments and portion weight.
Casing and seals: inspect splits, damaged end clips, leakage, trapped product in seals and swollen packs; isolate suspect stock for investigation.
Storage and records: match batch markings to processing and delivery records, review temperature records for chilled or frozen stock, and investigate thawing or damaged packaging.
Labels and quantity: check the ingredients, allergens, net quantity, storage instructions and UK business address against the approved artwork. Solid food packed in liquid or ice glaze must show drained net weight.

What goes wrong
A supplier changes fish species or replaces fish with more starch, altering both texture and the classification evidence. A tuna-based recipe is quoted using a suspension that excludes component mixtures. Keep the agreed formulation with the purchase order and obtain approval for recipe changes before production.
Cold-chain breaks can change fish sausage texture and colour. Weak seals or damaged casings cause leakage, while an ambient-storage claim without supporting processing evidence creates uncertainty over the product's condition. Investigate these discrepancies before releasing stock. Use quality inspection guidance to agree the sampling and reporting brief.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fish sausages from China?
The selected candidate lines carry standard duties of 6% to 25%. The selected tuna line carries 20%; its listed suspension excludes component mixtures. Confirm the recipe and code before using a rate.
Can I import fish sausages from any Chinese factory?
Ask APHA or your customs broker to confirm the establishment's eligibility to export fishery products to Great Britain. Confirm the complete recipe, applicable certification and border arrangements before ordering.
Can Chinese fish sausages be stored at room temperature?
Ask for processing records and shelf-life evidence supporting ambient storage. Agree unopened and opened-pack storage instructions; do not infer shelf stability from a sealed casing.
