Sourcing Fireclay from China
Fireclay from China carries 0% UK import duty, with no anti-dumping duty. This guide covers the clay raw material; finished refractory bricks have a separate classification. Waste shipment controls apply if the material is waste, so establish its status before shipping. Cambridge China Bridge sources fireclay.

Fireclay duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, fireclay under 2508 30 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. Heading 2508 covers other clays and specified refractory minerals. The comparison rows distinguish fireclay from neighbouring raw materials; see the wider clays guide.
The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import waste control and an export waste control. Waste shipment controls only apply if the material is waste. For reclaimed clay or material described as a residue, confirm the requirements for the shipment from China with your customs broker before dispatch.
Finished refractory bricks belong to heading 6902 rather than the raw-clay heading. Confirm the commodity code against the composition, processing and supplied form, especially where additives are present.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fireclay | 2508 30 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other clays, for comparison with fireclay | 2508 40 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Mullite, a separate refractory material | 2508 60 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Chamotte or dinas earths, separately classified | 2508 70 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify chemistry and firing behaviour
State whether you need lumps, crushed clay or powder, and identify the intended ceramic body or refractory formulation. Agree alumina, silica and iron oxide content, moisture, particle-size distribution and loss on ignition, with named test methods and acceptance criteria. Ask the supplier to identify the deposit and any blending or additives.
Approve a sample through your own firing cycle. Compare plasticity, drying shrinkage, fired shrinkage, colour and deformation against the intended use. A chemistry report alone does not establish suitability. Keep the approved sample and request batch-specific results.
UK REACH requires businesses to identify and manage risks from substances they manufacture and place on the Great Britain market. Review the registration or exemption position for the actual material before sale. Fine clay dust can contain respirable crystalline silica; request mineral-content and safety information and plan dust control during unloading and mixing.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 tonnes of fireclay in bulk bags under 2508 30 00 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,000, so it is £1,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match bag labels, batch references and test reports to the approved deposit, grade and declared additives.
Material: sample across the shipment for moisture, grading and chemistry; compare firing behaviour with the approved sample.
Contamination: check for stones, metal, foreign clay, discolouration and hard lumps that do not disperse as expected.
Packing: inspect liners, seams, lifting loops, bag weights and pallet condition before loading; check for torn bags and water ingress on arrival.

What goes wrong
A changed deposit or undeclared blend can alter plasticity, fired colour and shrinkage even when the product name stays the same. Excess iron or an unsuitable composition can cause unwanted colour or deformation during firing. Approve changes through a fresh sample trial before accepting the batch.
Wet clay cakes, inconsistent grading changes mixing behaviour, and damaged bags lose powder or admit contamination. Record bag condition on arrival and retain samples from affected batches before mixing them into stock.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fireclay from China?
The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for fireclay under 2508 30 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure.
Is fireclay classified like refractory bricks?
No. Fireclay raw material is under 2508 30 00 00; finished refractory bricks belong to heading 6902. Check the supplied form before declaring the goods.
What should I test before buying fireclay?
Check chemistry, moisture, grading and loss on ignition, then trial plasticity, shrinkage and deformation through your intended firing cycle.
Does fireclay need waste import paperwork?
Waste shipment controls apply if the material is waste. The tariff attaches a waste control; ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the actual shipment from China.
