Sourcing fibre-optic image bundles from China

Fibre-optic image bundles from China normally carry 2% UK duty; qualifying image reversers and specified fibre-optic plates have a 0% suspension. Confirm the actual construction and suspension conditions before declaring the goods. Conformity marking depends on the applicable product rules. Cambridge China Bridge sources fibre-optic image bundles.

Duty on fibre-optic image bundles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, image conductor cables, optical fibre image reversers and other optical fibre bundles carried a normal duty of 2% for goods from China. Heading 9001 covers optical fibres, bundles and certain cables alongside other unmounted optical elements. See the optical lenses and fibres guide for the wider heading. The table separates product forms that can share a code.

The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or attached import control for these lines. Image reversers have a 0% suspension, excluding mixtures, preparations or products made from different components containing them. The suspension for other fibres and bundles covers specified fibre-optic plates and polymer optical fibre, rather than every image bundle. Its supplied polymer description is incomplete, so confirm eligibility with your customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using drawings, construction details and intended function. The import declaration must include the commodity code. Do not assume a finished imaging instrument belongs under its fibre component's code. Check the suspension wording against the actual goods before using a reduced rate.

Specify image transfer, orientation and end faces

Specify a coherent image bundle that preserves the spatial arrangement of the image, rather than a bundle intended only to carry illumination. State the active image area, fibre arrangement, bundle length, sheath material, numerical aperture, spectral transmission and required image orientation. For an image reverser, define the input and output orientation with a labelled drawing.

Agree image resolution, permitted dark spots, distortion and brightness variation using a reference target and fixed illumination. Specify end-face polish, flatness, ferrule dimensions, alignment features and the permitted bend radius. Approve a sample in the intended optical assembly and obtain batch test results using the same setup.

For supply in Great Britain, UK REACH generally covers substances in articles, and restrictions can limit, ban or impose conditions on substances. Request material information for the fibres, sheath and bonding materials. Conformity marking is necessary only where sector-specific regulations require it; assess the supplied product and its intended use before requesting CE or UKCA marking.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative sample batch of image conductor cables, not a quotation under 9001 10 10 00, invoiced at £2,000 free on board, with £30 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,030. Duty at 2% is £40.60. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,070.60, so it is £414.12. Import taxes total £454.72; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £40.60 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Image transfer: view the agreed target through the bundle and check orientation, resolution, distortion, dark spots and brightness variation against the approved sample.

End faces: inspect for chips, scratches, contamination and poorly polished areas; check active area, ferrule fit and alignment against the drawing.

Flexibility and transmission: test at the agreed bend radius and compare the transmitted image before and after bending, using the specified illumination.

Packing and records: check end caps, strain relief, protective packing and batch identification. Include these checks in the inspection brief and repeat the image test on arrival.

What goes wrong

An illumination bundle can transmit light without carrying a usable image. A sample can also look acceptable under bright illumination while dark spots or poor contrast become obvious in the intended assembly. Keep the target, illumination and viewing conditions fixed when comparing samples and production batches.

Tight packing bends can damage fibres, while exposed end faces collect contamination or suffer chips. Incorrect ferrules or image orientation can make a bundle unusable despite acceptable transmission. Agree rejection criteria and protective packing before production, then isolate incoming batches that fail the agreed checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on fibre-optic image bundles from China?

The normal rate is 2%. Qualifying image reversers and specified fibre-optic plates have a 0% suspension. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty for these lines.

How do I distinguish an image bundle from an illumination bundle?

Ask for a coherent bundle and test it with a reference target. It should preserve the image's spatial arrangement and meet the agreed resolution, orientation and dark-spot limits.

Does a fibre-optic image bundle need CE or UKCA marking?

Conformity marking is required only where sector-specific regulations require it. Assess the supplied product and intended use; the tariff heading alone does not settle the marking question.

What should I test when the bundles arrive?

Check image orientation, resolution, dark spots, transmission, end-face condition and ferrule fit. Repeat the approved target test under the same illumination and check for damage after shipping.
