Sourcing optical polarising sheets from China

Optical polarising sheets and plates from China carry 0% UK import duty under 9001 20 00 00, with no trade remedy listed in the supplied tariff record. UK REACH applies to substances in articles, so check the film and adhesive against applicable chemical restrictions. Cambridge China Bridge sources optical polarising sheets.

Duty on polarising sheets and plates

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 17 October 2026, sheets and plates of polarising material under 9001 20 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line.

Heading 9001 also covers optical fibres and other unmounted optical elements. This guide covers polarising sheets and plates only; the listed product forms share the same tariff line. See the optical lenses and fibres guide for the wider heading.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual goods, particularly when buying a complete display rather than loose polarising material. A zero duty rate does not remove import VAT; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the polarisation axis and film stack

Specify sheet dimensions, thickness, polarisation axis relative to the cutting edge, light transmission, polarisation efficiency, colour and haze. State whether the order is bare film or an adhesive-backed laminate, identify the bonding face and release liner, and agree test conditions and tolerances before approving the sample.

Test the sample in the intended display or optical assembly. Agree acceptance for bubbles, scratches, edge damage, flatness and adhesive residue, together with performance after the intended heat and moisture exposure. Ask for batch test reports tied to the material supplied.

UK REACH generally applies to substances in articles, and its restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances. Ask the factory for material information covering the polarising film, protective layers and adhesive, then check applicable restrictions for supply in Great Britain.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 10,000 cut polarising sheets under 9001 20 00 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optics: measure transmission and polarisation efficiency against the agreed specification, and compare colour and haze with the approved sample.

Axis and dimensions: check the polarisation axis against the marked edge, sheet size, thickness and fit in the intended assembly.

Surface and adhesive: inspect for scratches, bubbles, trapped particles, delamination and residue after removing the liner.

Packing and records: check protective films, separation between sheets, moisture damage and batch identification. Set these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

An incorrectly orientated polarisation axis can make a display appear dark even when the sheet fits. Material substitution can change transmission or colour, while adhesive bubbles and trapped particles become visible after lamination. Approve an assembled sample rather than judging loose film by appearance alone.

Sheets can arrive scratched, curled or with lifting edges. Keep an approved reference sample and compare incoming batches under the same test conditions. Agree how defective sheets will be identified and isolated before they reach assembly.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polarising sheets from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% duty under 9001 20 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control listed.

What should I specify when ordering polarising sheets?

Specify dimensions, thickness, polarisation axis, transmission, polarisation efficiency, colour, haze and adhesive construction. Agree tolerances and approve a sample in the intended assembly.

Do UK REACH rules apply to polarising film?

UK REACH generally covers substances in articles. Check applicable restrictions using material information for the film, protective layers and adhesive before supplying the sheets in Great Britain.

How do I check the polarisation axis on arrival?

Compare the sheet against a reference polariser using the agreed test method. Check that the axis matches the marked cutting edge and confirm performance in the intended assembly.
