Weatherboard duty and asbestos restrictions

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 24 October 2026, heading 6811 covers articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fibre-cement or similar materials. Asbestos-free weatherboards supplied as sheets, panels or similar articles fall within the description of 6811 82 00 00. The table shows different weatherboard finishes using that same tariff line.

The recorded duty for goods from China is 0%. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. This does not remove the asbestos restriction: UK REACH prohibits placing articles containing intentionally added asbestos on the market. Specify asbestos-free material and obtain laboratory evidence before shipment.

Confirm the composition and form against the commodity code guide, particularly where the supplier calls a different mineral board fibre cement. See the wider fibre cement guide for other products within the heading.

Specify the weatherboard and its installed finish

Agree board length, width, thickness, edge profile, overlap and exposed face dimensions. State whether the surface is smooth or woodgrain, primed or factory-painted. Approve a physical colour and texture sample, and agree coating coverage on the face, edges and reverse, together with cut-edge treatment and compatible touch-up material.

Use the reference guide as a starting point and confirm the applicable flat-sheet standard and any declaration of performance and UKCA or CE marking requirements with the relevant authority. CE marking continues to be available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market. Request documents identifying the actual weatherboard, intended exterior use, strength and reaction-to-fire performance. Match the fire evidence to the supplied coating.

Ask for installation instructions covering support spacing, fixings, joint gaps, corners and openings. Agree flat pallet packing, edge protection and safe unloading arrangements. Use testing and certification support to agree the evidence needed before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative container order of asbestos-free fibre cement weatherboards under 6811 82 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,500, so it is £2,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: check the asbestos-free specification, laboratory report and product identification against the shipment.

Dimensions: measure thickness, width, length, straightness and edge profile against the agreed drawing; check that the overlap fits the approved sample.

Finish: compare colour and woodgrain across packs; inspect coating coverage, scratches, blistering and cut edges.

Arrival: inspect pallets before unloading and record broken corners, chipped edges, cracks and bowed boards. Match pack identification to the performance documents.

What goes wrong

Weatherboards can arrive with broken edges, uneven coating or colour differences that become obvious across a wall. Poorly conditioned boards can bow or move after installation, while unsuitable fixing details can cause cracking at holes. Agree rejection criteria against the approved sample and record damage before distributing the packs.

A report for an uncoated sheet does not establish the performance of the supplied painted board. Check that product descriptions, coating details and declarations refer to the goods ordered. Treat an asbestos-free sales statement as a reason to request laboratory evidence, rather than as a substitute for it.
