Soffit board duty and asbestos restrictions

Heading 6811 covers articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fibre-cement or similar materials. Asbestos-free flat soffit boards fall within the sheets and panels description of 6811 82 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff classifications. For related cladding products, see fibre cement weatherboards.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. This does not override the asbestos restriction: UK REACH prohibits placing articles with intentionally added asbestos on the market, and placing on the market includes import.

Confirm the material composition and finished form with your customs broker using finding your commodity code. Do not assume a calcium silicate, magnesium oxide or gypsum board belongs to the same heading merely because the supplier describes it as a soffit board.

Specify the soffit layout and board finish

State that the boards are for the underside of roof eaves. Agree thickness, width, length, flatness, edge profile and fixing-hole layout against the installation drawing. Specify plain or perforated boards, and agree the ventilation opening pattern and usable open area with the buyer's designer. Check the fit with fascia, joints and supporting members using an approved sample.

Agree an asbestos-free specification and obtain batch-linked laboratory reports before shipment. Confirm with the relevant construction-products authority whether the flat fibre cement sheets need a declaration of performance and UKCA or CE marking for their intended use. CE marking remains available for construction products placed on the Great Britain market. Ask for performance documents covering the actual board and coating, together with fixing, cutting and edge-sealing instructions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a 20-foot container of palletised fibre cement soffit boards under 6811 82 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,500, so it is £2,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure thickness, width and length against the order; check squareness, bowing and the fit of adjoining edges.

Ventilation: compare perforation size, spacing and position with the approved drawing; check for blocked openings and cracks around holes.

Finish: compare colour and texture with the approved sample; inspect coating adhesion, cut edges, staining and chips around fixing holes.

Packing and documents: inspect pallet support, edge protection and transit damage; match batch labels to asbestos reports and performance documents. Agree the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A perforated sample can be approved while the shipment contains plain boards or a different opening pattern. Hole placement can also clash with supports or leave fragile strips near the edge. Freeze the drawing and inspect production boards against it before dispatch.

Long strips can arrive bowed or with broken corners after poor pallet support. Boards may crack at fixings, while paint can blister or differ between batches. Separate damaged stock on arrival, photograph pallet and board condition, and compare retained samples before accepting replacements.
