2% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, artificial fur and articles thereof, heading 4304, is a single line at 2% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure.

Faux fur fabric sold by the metre is usually classified as knitted or woven pile fabric (see our fleece and pile fabrics guide), and coats with faux fur as clothing, often at 12%. Confirm the commodity code from whether the item is fabric, a made-up article or a garment.

Labelling and real-fur risk

Faux fur pile is textile fibre, so products sold as textiles need fibre composition labelling under the retained textile fibre names regulation, Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011. Real animal fur found in a product sold as faux is a serious trading standards problem, and cheap real fur from farmed animals has been found in items sold as faux in the UK.

Consumer products must also be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, and faux fur toys and children's items must meet the toy safety rules, including on shedding fibres.

Specifying faux fur

Specify fibre composition (acrylic, modacrylic, polyester), pile height and density, backing fabric, colour and tipping, weight per square metre, shedding limit, washing or cleaning instructions, flammability where used in furnishings, and the product construction and labels.

Worked duty example

Suppose, purely for illustration, you import 3,000 faux fur throws and cushion covers under 4304 00 00 00. At £27,000 free on board and £2,200 to ship and insure, the customs value is £29,200. Faux fur products at 2% pay £584 of duty; VAT is then worked out on value plus duty, £29,784, giving £5,956.80. Of the £6,540.80 paid at import, only the £584 of duty stays a cost for a VAT-registered business. The method is set out in how UK import duty and VAT work.

Inspection checklist

Real fur check: examine the base of the pile on sampled items, since real fur grows from skin while faux fur is knitted or woven into a fabric backing, and have a fibre test done if in doubt.

Fibre and shedding: check the composition label against a fibre test for the lot, and brush-test samples to check shedding against the agreed limit.

Colour and finish: check colour and tipping against the approved sample in daylight, check seams and backing, and check care labels and packing.

What goes wrong

Faux fur goods fail on authenticity, shedding and labelling. Products sold as faux contain real fur, pile sheds heavily in use, composition labels do not match the fibre, and colour or tipping varies between batches.

Check the pile base and test fibres, brush-test for shedding, and approve colour samples. See our quality inspection guide.

Cambridge China Bridge sources faux fur throws, trims and accessories for UK homeware and fashion brands, and has no minimum order of its own; the factory's minimum per design applies. See small orders.
