Sourcing primary-form EPDM rubber from China

EPDM rubber in primary forms from China carries 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Distinguish the base polymer from compounded rubber and check UK REACH coverage for its monomers and additives before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources EPDM rubber in primary forms.

EPDM duty and the primary-form boundary

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 November 2026, EPDM rubber under 4002 70 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension was recorded. The table shows forms covered by the same EPDM commodity line, rather than separate tariff subheadings. For other polymers within heading 4002, see synthetic rubber from China.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to this line. For waste shipped under notification controls, the authorities of destination, dispatch and transit must consent before shipment. For a proposed shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm whether the material is waste and which requirements apply. Do this before ordering off-specification or recovered material.

This guide concerns primary-form EPDM for subsequent processing. Unvulcanised rubber already mixed with fillers or curatives is compounded rubber of heading 4005. Confirm the commodity code using the composition and technical data sheet. Confirm with HSE whether UK REACH registration or upstream coverage is relevant to the polymer, monomers and additives in the actual grade.

Specify the EPDM grade and trial recipe

Specify the manufacturer's grade, physical form, Mooney viscosity, ethylene content, diene content and any oil extension. Record the antioxidant package and whether it is non-staining. Ask for a technical data sheet, a batch certificate of analysis and a sample from the proposed production grade.

Agree the test methods and acceptance ranges with your compounder. Trial the sample in the recipe you intend to use, then compare cure behaviour and cured properties with the approved material. Agree wrapping, storage conditions and maximum age at loading so that a matching grade name does not become the only acceptance check.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of EPDM rubber in bales under 4002 70 00 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £42,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £42,000, so it is £8,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: check bale labels, manufacturer, grade and batch references against the order and certificate of analysis.

Composition: sample across bales and compare Mooney viscosity, ethylene and diene content, oil content, volatile matter and ash with the agreed specification.

Cure behaviour: mix the agreed trial recipe and compare cure curves and cured tensile properties with the approved lot.

Packing: inspect wrapping, contamination, bale weight, cold flow and sticking to crates; record packaging damage on arrival.

What goes wrong

Batch variation in Mooney viscosity changes mixing and extrusion behaviour. A different oil content or antioxidant package can undermine an otherwise familiar grade, while staining antioxidants discolour light-coloured products. Treat substitutions as a fresh material trial.

Bales can flow together in hot containers and stick to their packaging. Agree packing and storage before shipment, retain an approved sample and compare arriving lots before releasing them into production. Use the quality inspection guide to set out the sampling and acceptance brief.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on EPDM rubber from China?

Primary-form EPDM under 4002 70 00 00 carries 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty was recorded.

Is EPDM compound covered by the same commodity code?

Unvulcanised rubber mixed with fillers or curatives is compounded rubber of heading 4005. Give your broker the full composition rather than declaring it simply as EPDM.

Does imported EPDM need UK REACH registration?

Confirm with HSE whether registration or upstream coverage under UK REACH is relevant to the polymer, monomers and additives. Check the position for the grade and ingredients you will import.

How do I compare Chinese EPDM with my current grade?

Compare Mooney viscosity, ethylene and diene content, oil content and antioxidant package. Trial both materials in the same recipe and compare cure curves and cured properties.
