UK duty on engine-fitted passenger-car chassis

Heading 8706 covers chassis fitted with engines for vehicles of headings 8701 to 8705. This guide covers chassis intended for passenger cars of heading 8703. The table separates petrol and diesel variants under the same applicable codes. For other vehicle applications, see engine-fitted chassis.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the relevant China-origin lines carry 6% under 8706 00 19 00 and 4% under 8706 00 91 00. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. It attaches fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and a DCMS Export Licence measure. Confirm the movement-specific declarations with your customs broker. Match engine type, capacity and intended vehicle using finding your commodity code.

If air-conditioning is supplied, record refrigerant type and charge quantity and confirm the applicable import requirements with your broker. Official guidance includes vehicle air-conditioning and requires imported fluorinated-gas equipment, including empty equipment, to be labelled correctly. The cultural-object guidance states that Great Britain has no cultural-object import licensing requirement; ask your broker to confirm how the tariff's export measure affects your transaction.

Specify the engine and body interfaces

Agree the engine model, fuel type, cylinder capacity, gearbox, steering position, wheelbase, track and axle ratings. Define exactly what is supplied: frame, running gear, brakes, wiring, cooling system, exhaust and control units. Use a signed component list and drawings to prevent a running chassis being supplied with missing integration parts.

Give the factory body mounting coordinates, permitted attachment methods and the intended finished vehicle configuration. Request matching engine and chassis identification records, wiring diagrams, diagnostic access and service information. Before ordering, ask the relevant vehicle approval authority to confirm the route for the completed vehicle. Proof of vehicle approval is needed for registration and taxation; agree who supplies the supporting documents.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of one engine-fitted passenger-car chassis for a vehicle builder; freight includes insurance under 8706 00 91 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 4% is £740. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £19,240, so it is £3,848. Import taxes total £4,588; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £740 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match chassis markings, engine identification, cylinder capacity and gearbox to the order, invoice and supplied documents.

Geometry and structure: measure wheelbase, track and body mounting points against the drawings; inspect welds, frame distortion, corrosion and protective coating.

Running systems: witness a supported engine test, inspect fuel and coolant leaks, check wiring and diagnostic faults, and verify steering and brake operation against the agreed test plan.

Arrival condition: compare photographs with the pre-shipment record; check securing-point damage, exposed connectors, missing components and moisture around protected openings. Agree the scope through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A substituted engine or gearbox can leave the buyer with mismatched documents, wiring and body clearances. Moving body mounts or changing axle equipment can also undermine the planned build. Require written acceptance of substitutions and revised drawings before shipment.

A running engine does not establish that the finished car can be registered. Resolve the approval route and document responsibilities before paying for production. Photographs can also hide frame distortion or omitted control units, so use measured inspection records and a component inventory.
