Sourcing electromagnetic clutches from China

Electromagnetic clutches and the listed clutch parts from China carry 0% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Match the exact tariff description and assess safety requirements by voltage and intended function before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources electromagnetic clutches.

Zero duty on the listed clutch lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 8505 covers electromagnetic clutches alongside couplings, brakes, magnets and magnetic holding devices. The selected clutch and parts lines all show 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions listed.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches a supplementary-unit import measure to 8505 20 00 30 and 8505 90 90 20. The supplied entries do not specify the unit, so confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker. The other selected lines have no attached controls in the supplied facts.

Use the drawing, coil specification and intended application to confirm the commodity code. The compressor-manufacturing, mower-manufacturing and specified-coil descriptions are narrow; do not select them merely because the product is a clutch. For the wider heading, see electromagnetic lifting magnets.

Specify torque, coil duty and shaft fit

State whether the clutch engages or releases when energised, the required transmitted torque, operating speed, engagement frequency and permissible slip. Specify coil voltage, current, resistance at an agreed temperature, continuous or intermittent operation, ambient temperature and connector arrangement. Ask for torque and temperature-rise results under your intended operating conditions.

Provide a drawing covering bore, keyway or spline, mounting face, pulley profile, alignment and working air gap. Agree friction material, bearing specification, corrosion protection and adjustment instructions. Test a sample in the intended assembly before approving the production specification.

Assess electrical safety scope from the voltage rating. Electrical equipment within the applicable safety regulations must be accompanied by clear, legible instructions in understandable English. For the completed machine, government guidance requires the responsible person to ensure it is safe before placing it on the Great Britain market or putting it into service. Use testing and certification to review the intended configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of replacement electromagnetic clutches for a machinery distributor under 8505 20 00 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the bore, keyway, mounting face, pulley alignment and air gap against the approved drawing; check bearings turn smoothly.

Coil: measure resistance at the agreed temperature, check current draw and connector wiring, and inspect insulation and cable strain relief.

Function: test transmitted torque, engagement, release and residual drag on a guarded rig; repeat after operation at the agreed load and duty cycle.

Condition and records: inspect friction faces for oil, corrosion and damage; match model identification and test records to the delivered batch. Agree the sampling plan through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A clutch can fit the shaft yet slip under load because its torque rating was measured under different conditions. Excessive air gap can weaken engagement, while an undersized coil or unsuitable duty rating can cause overheating. Compare loaded and warmed-up performance with the agreed specification.

Incorrect pulley alignment, rough bearings and contaminated friction faces can cause noise, drag or uneven wear. A replacement described only by machine model may have a different connector or mounting arrangement. Resolve these details on the drawing and approved sample before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electromagnetic clutches from China?

The listed electromagnetic clutch and clutch-part lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers a replacement electromagnetic clutch?

8505 20 00 90 is the other-clutches line. Confirm the exact product description; the compressor and mower lines describe particular goods for manufacturing.

What should I ask the clutch factory to specify?

Torque under your operating conditions, speed, coil voltage and duty, engagement and release behaviour, shaft fit, pulley alignment, air gap and connector wiring.

How do I check whether a clutch will overheat?

Run a sample at the agreed load, engagement frequency and duty cycle. Record current draw and temperature rise, then check torque and release after warming up.
