Sourcing electric steam boilers from China
Electric steam boilers from China under heading 8402 carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. For Great Britain, check the applicable pressure-equipment conformity requirements before sale and arrange examination before use. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric steam boilers.

0% UK duty on electric steam boilers
Heading 8402 covers steam or other vapour generating boilers, superheated water boilers and parts. This guide focuses on electrically heated steam boilers. The table shows construction and parts categories rather than a dedicated electric-boiler code. See the wider steam boiler guide for the whole heading.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, tariff suspensions or attached import controls. This tariff position does not replace product conformity checks.
Confirm the commodity code using the boiler drawing, steam output and construction. Electric heating alone does not identify the commodity line. Have your broker check whether the shipment is a complete boiler or separately classified components.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other vapour generating boilers, including electric designs | 8402 19 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Watertube steam boilers producing no more than 45 tonnes per hour | 8402 12 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Watertube steam boilers producing more than 45 tonnes per hour | 8402 11 00 00 | 0% | None |

Specify steam output and the electrical supply
Specify steam output at the intended working pressure, feedwater temperature, vessel material, usable steam connections and whether heating uses immersion elements or electrodes. Agree supply voltage, phase, frequency, connected load and control-panel layout with the site electrician. Include feed pumps, water treatment, blowdown arrangements, access for descaling and the replacement heaters or electrodes you need.
The Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 cover pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. Agree the applicable category and conformity assessment route before fabrication. For equipment subject to essential safety requirements, confirm the required declaration of conformity and applicable CE or UKCA marking with the relevant authority or your customs broker. Match the documents to the supplied vessel and assembled package.
Ask for English instructions, electrical schematics, operating limits and water-quality guidance for the actual model. Before first use of qualifying pressure equipment, a written scheme of examination must be in place and the examination undertaken. Arrange this with a competent person alongside installation planning; a factory pressure-test report does not replace the examination.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: One electric steam boiler for a laundry, illustrative order under 8402 19 90 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Documents: match the nameplate, serial number, design pressure and supplied configuration to the declaration, drawings and material records. Check that the English instructions describe the actual controls.
Vessel: witness the agreed hydrostatic test at the factory, review weld inspection records and check heater or electrode seals, valve connections and access covers for leakage.
Controls: have qualified personnel demonstrate low-water shutdown, overpressure protection, heater staging and pump operation. Check earthing, terminal identification and the panel against the agreed electrical supply.
Arrival: inspect the vessel, insulation, panel and pipe connections for transport damage. Reconcile pumps, valves, spares and documents against the packing list. Plan quality inspection before shipment as well as arrival checks.

What goes wrong
An output claim without stated pressure and feedwater conditions can conceal inadequate steam delivery. Scale can damage immersion heaters, while an electrode design needs water conductivity matched to its operating instructions. Wrong supply wiring, substituted contactors and poorly set level controls can prevent reliable operation.
Documents may describe the vessel but omit the assembled controls and accessories. Heater seals or pipe joints may leak after transport, and inaccessible elements make maintenance difficult. Agree the acceptance test, documentation scope, spare-part drawings and commissioning responsibilities before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on electric steam boilers from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% across the relevant heading 8402 lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the line from the boiler construction and output.
Which commodity code covers an electric steam boiler?
There is no dedicated electric line in this snapshot. Other vapour generating boilers are 8402 19 90 00; watertube designs have separate output-based lines. Confirm the design with your broker.
Does an electric steam boiler need CE or UKCA marking?
For pressure equipment subject to essential safety requirements, confirm the applicable CE or UKCA marking and declaration-of-conformity requirements with the relevant authority or your customs broker. Agree the category and assessment route for the actual assembly.
Can I use the boiler after its factory pressure test?
Qualifying pressure equipment needs a written scheme of examination and an examination before use. Arrange these with a competent person; the factory test alone does not satisfy that requirement.
