Sourcing electric pallet trucks from China
Electric pallet trucks from China carry 4% ordinary UK duty across the relevant lines. New machinery sold in Great Britain must have CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Check the boom-lift measure's scope rather than assuming it applies to every truck under the code. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric pallet trucks.

Electric pallet truck codes and UK duty
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, heading 8427 covers fork-lift trucks and other works trucks fitted with lifting or handling equipment. Electric propulsion and lifting height determine the relevant branch. Low-lift pedestrian and ride-on models share a code, so the table repeats that line for different buying configurations. A truck with powered lifting but manual travel needs separate classification.
Ordinary duty is 4% throughout the selected lines, with no listed suspensions. The supplied tariff attaches provisional anti-dumping duty of 71.74% and anti-dumping or countervailing registration to these codes. The reference guide identifies the remedy as a boom-lift case and explains exclusion declarations for goods outside its description. Confirm the model's scope and additional code with your broker. See the wider heading guide.
The tariff also attaches waste import and export controls, and fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls to the electric self-propelled lines. Waste controls apply only to waste; notified waste imports into England begin with the exporter applying for consent in the dispatch country. Confirm the shipment's status and the fluorinated-gas requirement with your customs broker. Supply the travel mechanism, lifting height and model documents when finding your commodity code.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pedestrian electric pallet trucks with lifting height below 1 m | 8427 10 90 00 | 4% | 71.74% residual anti-dumping (provisional) |
| Electric pallet stacking trucks with lifting height of 1 m or more | 8427 10 10 90 | 4% | 71.74% residual anti-dumping (provisional) |
| Manually propelled pallet trucks with powered lifting, subject to classification | 8427 90 00 80 | 4% | 71.74% residual anti-dumping (provisional) |
Specify the pallet, floor and charging arrangement
Give the factory your pallet drawing, fork length, outside fork width, lowered fork height, load and load centre. Specify pedestrian or ride-on operation, aisle space, turning clearance, floor joints and any loading ramp. Describe whether the truck only moves pallets or must also stack them. Ask for a demonstration with your pallet type and an agreed load.
Agree the battery chemistry, capacity, removable or fixed pack, charger input and connector, and access for replacement. Request a parts list for wheels, rollers, brakes, hydraulic seals and the tiller assembly. For new machinery sold in Great Britain, check CE or UKCA marking, the declaration of conformity and English instructions against the supplied model.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 electric pallet trucks; illustrative order, not a quotation under 8427 10 90 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £1,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,000. Duty at 4% is £440. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,440, so it is £2,288. Import taxes total £2,728; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £440 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Forks and pallet fit: measure against the approved drawing, check entry and exit with the intended pallet, and inspect fork tips, welds, rollers and transport damage.
Travel and braking: test forward and reverse travel, steering, tiller return, emergency stop and anti-crush reverse where fitted, using the agreed inspection procedure.
Lift and hydraulics: lift and lower the agreed load, check for drift and leaks, and record unusual pump noise or uneven fork movement.
Battery and documents: run the supplied charger, inspect cables and connectors, and match the model plate, declaration and manual. Arrange quality inspection before shipment and repeat the functional checks on arrival.

What goes wrong
A truck can match the advertised lifting capacity yet fail the buyer's operation because the forks do not enter the pallet, the rollers catch on floor joints or the turning clearance is too large. Other points to look for are brake drag, hydraulic drift, loose battery connectors and a charger that does not match the pack. Put these checks into the purchase specification.
A tariff code alone does not settle the boom-lift remedy's scope. Ask the broker to confirm the exclusion treatment before budgeting the order. Likewise, a conformity logo without matching documents leaves the buyer without the required declaration or instructions. Resolve document mismatches before shipment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on electric pallet trucks from China?
The selected lines carry 4% ordinary duty. The supplied tariff also attaches a 71.74% provisional boom-lift measure, so confirm product scope and exclusion treatment before declaring a pallet truck.
Do electric pallet trucks need CE or UKCA marking?
New machinery placed on the Great Britain market must be CE or UKCA marked, accompanied by a declaration of conformity and supplied with English instructions.
Are electric lift and electric travel classified the same way?
Do not assume so. The tariff separates electrically self-propelled trucks from other trucks. Give your broker the travel mechanism and lifting height, rather than only the supplier's product name.
What should I send the factory before ordering?
Send the pallet drawing, fork dimensions, load and load centre, floor and ramp details, operating arrangement and charging specification. Agree a loaded demonstration and inspection procedure.
