Sourcing electric motor fan cowls from China
Ordinary electric motor fan cowls from China carry 2% UK duty under the relevant motor-parts lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Guard openings must prevent access to moving parts. Agree mounting dimensions and fan clearance before production. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric motor fan cowls.

Duty on motor fan cowls
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8503 covers parts suitable solely or principally for motors and generators. For fan cowls, the candidate lines are 8503 00 91 99 for cast iron or cast steel parts and 8503 00 98 99 for other parts. The table shows material variants sharing these codes, rather than separate tariff lines.
Both candidate lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Their authorised-use suspensions concern offshore wind rotor manufacture. The other suspension on 8503 00 98 99 names particular motor parts; it does not provide a general exemption for fan cowls. Do not budget for suspended duty without confirming eligibility.
The supplied tariff record attaches a supplementary-unit import measure to 8503 00 98 99 but gives no unit details. Ask your customs broker to confirm the declaration requirement. Confirm the commodity code using the material, drawing and intended motor application. For the related rotating part, see motor cooling fans.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cast iron motor fan cowls, subject to classification | 8503 00 91 99 | 2% | None |
| Pressed sheet-metal motor fan cowls, subject to classification | 8503 00 98 99 | 2% | None |
Specify the cowl around the actual motor
Provide the motor model and an interface drawing showing mounting diameter, hole positions, fixing method, cowl depth and clearance around the fan. Specify sheet material and thickness or plastic resin, ventilation pattern, finish and exposure conditions. Approve a sample fitted to the actual motor, including the fasteners.
HSE guidance says mesh or similar guard openings should not allow access to moving parts. Check the fitted cowl's openings and its distance from the fan together. Components can require individual conformity assessment and marking, so confirm the exact product's scope before agreeing marks or documents with the factory.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 pressed sheet-metal motor fan cowls; illustrative order, subject to classification under 8503 00 98 99, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 2% is £270. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,770, so it is £2,754. Import taxes total £3,024; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £270 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Fit: check mounting diameter, hole positions and depth against the drawing; assemble sampled cowls without forcing holes or distorting the rim.
Clearance: check that the fan turns freely with the cowl fitted and that tightening the fasteners does not pull the cover towards the blades.
Material and finish: check material records, sheet thickness or moulded wall thickness, burrs, cracks, coating coverage and exposed edges against the approved sample.
Packing and identification: check model and batch labels, protect rims from crushing and compare arrival condition with dispatch photographs. Agree the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
Matching only the motor's nominal size can leave mounting holes misaligned or the cowl too shallow. Thin rims distort when fasteners are tightened, while transport dents can cause fan contact. Check the assembled sample and repeat the fit check on bulk goods.
Changing the ventilation pattern or substituting plastic can alter cooling, stiffness and heat resistance. Keep the approved material and opening pattern on the drawing, and agree an assembled running check with the motor maker before accepting changes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on motor fan cowls from China?
The candidate motor-parts lines carry 2% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Listed suspensions are conditional and do not give ordinary fan cowls a general exemption.
Do imported motor fan cowls need UKCA or CE marking?
Confirm the exact cowl's scope and intended use. Some components require individual conformity assessment and marking; do not assume a supplier's generic motor certificate covers the cowl.
Will a cowl fit any motor with the same frame size?
Do not rely on frame size alone. Compare mounting diameter, hole positions, depth and fan clearance, then approve a sample assembled on the actual motor.
Can I replace a metal motor fan cowl with plastic?
Agree the change with the motor maker. Check resin, heat resistance, stiffness, fixing strength, ventilation and fan clearance against the intended operating conditions.
