Sourcing electric motor end shields from China
Ordinary electric motor end shields from China carry 2% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Conditional 0% relief on the relevant lines is not a general exemption for end shields. Classify by material and intended motor use. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric motor end shields.

Duty and codes for motor end shields
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 19 October 2026, heading 8503 covers parts suitable solely or principally for motors or generators of headings 8501 or 8502. Ordinary cast-iron or cast-steel end shields are candidates for 8503 00 91 99; aluminium and other end shields are candidates for 8503 00 98 99. The table separates material variants that share a code. See the wider motor-parts guide.
Both lines show 2% duty for China and no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Both attach conditional 0% authorised-use relief for manufacturing rotors for offshore wind turbines. The other-materials line also has a suspension restricted to listed products, not a general end-shield exemption. Authorised use requires authorisation. The UK Trade Tariff attaches a supplementary-unit import measure to 8503 00 98 99; confirm the declaration requirement with your customs broker.
Send the material specification, drawing and intended motor application to your broker to confirm the commodity code, including any claimed suspension. Budget ordinary end shields at 2% unless eligibility is confirmed. Use the import duty and VAT guide when checking landed cost.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cast-iron motor end shields | 8503 00 91 99 | 2% | None |
| Aluminium motor end shields | 8503 00 98 99 | 2% | None |
Specify the bearing seat and mating faces
Identify the drive-end or non-drive-end shield and the matching motor frame. Specify the material grade, casting process, bearing type, bearing-seat fit, retaining arrangement and seal recess. Put bore roundness, concentricity to the locating spigot, face flatness and bolt-hole positions on the drawing.
Agree machining datums, surface finish, coating and which surfaces remain uncoated. Supply a mating housing and bearing for sample assembly. Confirm with the relevant authority whether UKCA marking applies to the ordinary parts supplied to a motor maker, and which UKCA or CE marking requirements apply to the finished motor or machine for the Great Britain market.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of machined aluminium motor end shields under 8503 00 98 99, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: match casting identification and material certificates to the approved grade and drawing revision.
Bearing seat: measure bore size, roundness and concentricity against the drawing; section or X-ray sample castings for porosity around the seat.
Assembly: check locating-spigot fit, mating-face flatness, bolt holes, bearing retention and seal recesses using the intended mating parts.
Arrival: inspect machined surfaces for corrosion, dents, burrs and coating overspray; confirm protective packing and batch identification. Agree the sampling brief through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A bearing bore that is oversized can lose its intended fit; an undersized bore can distort the bearing during assembly. A bore machined off-centre to the locating spigot can misalign the shaft. Porosity around the bearing seat can remain hidden beneath a finished surface.
Coating on the bore or mating face changes the fit, while damaged spigots prevent correct seating. Approve a measured sample and an assembly trial before bulk production, then compare production samples with the same drawing and mating parts.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on motor end shields from China?
Ordinary end shields carry 2% duty. The supplied tariff facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Conditional suspensions are not a general exemption for end shields.
Which commodity code covers electric motor end shields?
Ordinary cast-iron or cast-steel shields are candidates for 8503 00 91 99; aluminium and other shields for 8503 00 98 99. Confirm material, construction and intended motor use with your broker.
Do motor end shields need UKCA marking?
Confirm with the relevant authority whether UKCA marking applies to ordinary parts supplied to a motor maker. Also confirm which UKCA or CE marking requirements apply to the finished motor or machine for the Great Britain market.
What should I check on an end-shield sample?
Check bearing-seat size and roundness, concentricity to the spigot, mating-face flatness, bolt-hole positions and casting porosity. Trial-assemble it with the intended bearing and housing.
