Sourcing electric carving knives from China

Domestic electric carving knives from China provisionally use the other-appliances line at a flat 2% UK duty. Before selling mains models in Great Britain, check electrical safety conformity and match documents to the supplied motor, switch, cable and plug. UK duty on electric carving knives

Heading 8509 covers domestic electromechanical appliances with a self-contained electric motor, excluding vacuum cleaners. Domestic electric carving knives are candidates for the other-appliances line, subject to confirmation. The table distinguishes purchasing configurations sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Separately imported appliance parts need a classification check; do not assume that replacement blades use the appliance-parts code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the supplied other-appliances and parts lines carried 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspensions recorded. The other-appliances line has a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control. Official guidance addresses equipment pre-charged with hydrofluorocarbons; it does not establish the declaration requirement for these knives. The importer should confirm that requirement with their customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the domestic intended use, cutting mechanism, power source and supplied accessories. For another product within the wider heading, see electric tin openers.

Specify the blades, locking and cutting trial

Agree the reciprocating blade arrangement, tooth profile, blade material, exposed cutting length and supplied blade sets. Define how blades engage, lock and release, and how the trigger and safety control operate. Use agreed cooked meat and bread for a repeatable cutting trial. Record slice quality, stalling, vibration and grip comfort against the approved sample.

Specify every food-contact material and finish. Confirm the applicable food-contact requirements with the relevant food safety authority, including requirements concerning adverse effects on food or drink. Ask for material identification and test evidence suited to the intended foods and cleaning method. Define which parts detach for washing, how the handle stays dry, and whether dishwasher claims are supported.

For mains models within the electrical safety rules, check technical documentation, the declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer details. The importer must ensure easily understandable English instructions accompany the equipment. Assess electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance restrictions, including applicable exceptions. Match reports to the actual motor, switch, cable and plug. Use testing and certification to resolve gaps before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 domestic electric carving knives; illustrative order, not a quotation under 8509 80 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Blades and locking: check blade engagement, alignment, retention and release against the approved sample; inspect teeth, burrs, corrosion and supplied blade covers.

Loaded cutting: use the agreed foods and operating cycle; check slice quality, stalling, excessive vibration, unusual noise and secure handling.

Controls and cleaning: check trigger return and the agreed safety control; disconnect the appliance before removing blades, then check dismantling, cleaning access and refitting.

Documents and packing: match model identifiers, ratings, motor, cable and plug to the approved configuration; check conformity marking, importer details, English instructions and transit protection.

What goes wrong

A knife may run freely without food but stall or tear slices under load. Misaligned blades can rub, while weak retaining mechanisms can allow movement during cutting. Poor cleaning access can leave residue near the blade sockets. Repeat the agreed cutting and assembly checks on production samples and delivered stock.

A changed motor, switch, cable or plug can leave the delivered model outside the configuration described in its reports. Require written approval for component changes. Check spare-blade fit and corrosion after the agreed cleaning trial rather than accepting a general stainless-steel claim.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on electric carving knives from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 2% under the provisional other-appliances code 8509 80 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension recorded. Confirm the model's classification.

Do electric carving knives need CE or UKCA marking?

For mains models within the electrical safety rules in Great Britain, check the applicable CE or UKCA conformity route, declaration and technical documents. Match the evidence to the delivered model.

What should I test before ordering electric carving knives?

Test cutting on agreed cooked meat and bread, blade locking and release, trigger return, vibration and cleaning access. Compare production samples with the approved knife and blade sets.

Does the fluorinated-gas tariff control apply to an electric carving knife?

The supplied tariff record attaches this control to the other-appliances line. The available guidance does not establish the knife's declaration requirement. Confirm it with your customs broker.
