Sourcing electric farm tractors from China
Electric agricultural tractors from China carry 0% UK duty across the listed wheeled agricultural power bands and the tracked line. Confirm agricultural classification and the exact model's approval route before road registration. Check battery, charging and implement performance under load. Cambridge China Bridge sources electric agricultural tractors.

0% duty for agricultural tractor lines
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 8701 covers tractors other than those of heading 8709. The wheeled agricultural tractor lines across all listed power bands and the track-laying line carry 0% duty for goods from China. These lines do not distinguish electric propulsion separately. No anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension is recorded for them.
The selected lines attach waste import controls; the lowest wheeled power band and tracked line also attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. Waste subject to notification cannot ship until the competent authorities of destination, dispatch and transit have consented. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment needs correct labelling. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirements for the tractor and any cab air conditioning. Cultural-object licensing and waste export controls are also listed for outward movements.
Confirm the design, agricultural use and declared power through finding your commodity code. The electric road tractor line is for semi-trailers, so do not select it merely because the tractor is electric. See the wider tractor guide for other types and UK import duty and VAT for tax calculations. Import VAT is normally 20%.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |

| Wheeled agricultural tractors, power not exceeding 18 kW | 8701 91 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Wheeled agricultural tractors, power over 18 kW and not exceeding 37 kW | 8701 92 10 00 | 0% | None |

Specify battery duty and implement compatibility
Specify sustained traction power, usable battery capacity, cooling, charger input, connector and charging arrangements at the buyer's premises. Define a working trial with the intended implement, soil conditions, hydraulic demand and starting battery charge. Record runtime, remaining charge, temperatures and any power reduction. Agree access to diagnostic software, replacement battery packs, controllers and charger parts.
For road registration, confirm the approval route for the exact tractor variant and obtain the manufacturer's conformity documents. Electric-vehicle traction batteries are classed as industrial batteries. If you are the industrial battery producer, register with the Office for Product Safety and Standards within 28 days of first placing the batteries on the UK market. Confirm the battery responsibilities before sale.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative dealer order of 12 electric agricultural tractors; illustrative FOB value and freight including insurance under 8701 93 10 00, invoiced at £180,000 free on board, with £14,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £194,000, so it is £38,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match tractor, battery, controller and charger identifiers to the agreed specification and approval documents; check that English operating and service instructions accompany the machine.
Battery and charging: inspect the enclosure, cable protection, connectors and isolation controls; demonstrate charging with the supplied equipment and record diagnostic faults before and after a loaded trial.
Implements and hydraulics: check linkage dimensions, power take-off speed and spline against the customer's implements; operate hydraulic outlets under load and inspect for leaks.
Arrival condition: photograph battery mounts, underbody, tyres or tracks and transport restraints; test steering, brakes and operator controls before release. Plan these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
An unloaded demonstration can hide short working runtime, overheating and power reduction when traction, hydraulics and implement drive operate together. A charger can arrive with a connection or input requirement the farm cannot accommodate. Put the actual working trial and charging arrangement in the purchase specification.
Approval paperwork can cover a different variant, while replacement controllers or battery packs may depend on unavailable software. Check model identity before shipment, agree diagnostic access and parts support, and record any component substitution for review before accepting it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on electric agricultural tractors from China?
The listed wheeled agricultural tractor power bands and track-laying line carry 0% duty, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.
Can an electric agricultural tractor be registered for UK road use?
The tractor needs the right approval for registration. Confirm the route and documents for the exact variant with DVLA, including whether any specialist-tractor exemption applies.
Are electric tractor batteries automotive batteries?
Batteries providing propulsion for electric vehicles are industrial batteries. Check the classification of any separate auxiliary battery and your producer responsibilities.
How should I test an electric tractor before shipment?
Use the intended implement under agreed working conditions. Record runtime, remaining charge, temperatures, hydraulic performance and power reduction, then demonstrate charging with the supplied charger.
