Sourcing articulated farm tractors from China

Articulated agricultural tractors from China carry 0% UK duty across the wheeled agricultural power bands, with no trade remedy recorded. For road registration, confirm the model's approval route and match the supplied tractor to its documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources articulated agricultural tractors.

0% duty for wheeled agricultural tractors

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 8701 covers tractors other than those of heading 8709. This guide covers articulated agricultural tractors, with the table showing the wheeled agricultural lines by engine power. These lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension recorded. Articulated steering does not have a separate line in the supplied tariff.

The tariff attaches an import waste control to these lines. England's guidance says waste shipment controls apply only to material classed as waste. For a China shipment subject to notification controls, the exporter must apply for consent to the competent authority in the country of dispatch. Ask your customs broker to confirm requirements for scrap or damaged tractors. The tariff also lists waste export controls and a cultural-object export licence measure; confirm these before onward export.

The lowest power band also has a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control; check cab air-conditioning as described below. Confirm agricultural use, wheeled construction and engine power through finding your commodity code. See tractors from China for the wider heading.

Specify the articulation joint and implement interfaces

Specify engine model and power, transmission, tyre sizes, operating width, turning clearance and the implements to be used. For the centre joint, agree pin and bush materials, lubrication access, permitted play, steering-cylinder arrangement and hose routing through the full steering movement. Request a joint drawing and a replacement-parts list.

Agree hydraulic flow and pressure, coupling types, linkage dimensions, drawbar arrangement and power take-off speed and spline. Request engine emission evidence for the supplied configuration and documentation for the roll-over protective structure. Use the reference tractor guide as a starting point and confirm with the relevant authority which non-road engine-emission requirements apply to the supplied engine and its power.

For road registration, confirm the applicable vehicle approval route before ordering. GOV.UK says a farm vehicle must have the right approval to be registered. Obtain conformity documents for the actual variant; a tractor's Certificate of Conformity is only valid when assembly is under the manufacturer's control.

For pre-charged cab air-conditioning, record refrigerant type and charge. Official guidance includes vehicle air-conditioning within pre-charged equipment. Registration and quota authorisations are needed when annual HFC imports reach 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent or more. Ask your broker to check the applicable gas-control declarations, exemptions and labelling before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 12 wheeled articulated agricultural tractors under 8701 93 10 00, invoiced at £180,000 free on board, with £14,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £194,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £194,000, so it is £38,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match tractor and engine markings, transmission, tyres and cab configuration to the order and supplied approval documents.

Centre joint: measure play against the agreed tolerance; inspect pins, bushes, welds and lubrication points. Check steering movement and hose clearance using the manufacturer's inspection procedure.

Working functions: test starting, gear selection, brakes, steering, hydraulic lift and power take-off against the agreed acceptance procedure. Inspect cylinder seals and couplings for leaks.

Arrival: check transport damage, joint restraint, loose fittings, manuals and spare parts before commissioning. Agree photographs and test records using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A running-engine video can miss excessive centre-joint play, steering-cylinder leakage and hoses rubbing when the tractor turns. Worn bushes or inconsistent joint machining can leave steering imprecise. Put measured joint checks and a steering demonstration in the acceptance plan, and agree how rejected findings will be resolved.

An engine or cab substitution can leave the supplied tractor different from its documented variant. Implement couplings and power take-off splines may also differ from the buyer's equipment. Record the accepted configuration, require approval of proposed substitutions, and confirm parts availability for joint bushes, steering seals and hydraulic fittings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on articulated agricultural tractors from China?

The supplied tariff lists 0% duty across the wheeled agricultural tractor power bands, with no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension recorded.

Can I register a Chinese articulated tractor for road use?

Confirm the applicable approval route before ordering. A farm vehicle needs the right approval for registration, and the supplied variant should match its approval and conformity documents.

What should I inspect on an articulated tractor?

Check centre-joint play, pins and bushes, steering-cylinder leaks and hose clearance through steering movement. Test brakes, hydraulics and implement interfaces against the agreed specification.

Does the tariff waste control apply to new tractors?

England's guidance says waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. Ask your broker to confirm the tariff requirement, especially for scrap, damaged or incomplete tractors.
