Sourcing e-bike parts from China
Selected mechanical e-bike parts carry 4% UK duty; the wider heading has ordinary rates from 0% to 4% and some lines add 48.50% anti-dumping duty. These rates do not establish duties for motors, controllers, displays or batteries. Battery safety and freight need separate checks. Cambridge China Bridge sources e-bike parts.

UK duty: separate mechanical and electrical parts
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8714 covers vehicle parts and accessories. The table selects mechanical companion parts for e-bike orders. The supplied tariff data contains no separate hub-motor, controller, display or lithium-battery lines, so it cannot establish their duties. An ordinary hub description should not be used as evidence for classifying a hub motor.
The selected table lines carry 4% ordinary duty for goods from China, without recorded trade remedies or suspensions. Across the supplied heading, ordinary duty ranges from 0% to 4%; some other lines add 48.50% residual anti-dumping duty or have conditional 0% suspensions. Do not transfer a mechanical component's rate or relief to an electrical component.
The tariff attaches a cultural-object export-licence control to the selected lines; ask your customs broker to confirm its relevance. Other lines attach authorised-use provisions, which need checking before claiming relief. Give the broker separate specifications and invoice descriptions to confirm each commodity code. For the wider conversion-kit purchase, see checks before fitting.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bicycle wheel rims, supplied separately from motors | 8714 92 10 00 | 4% | None |
| Ordinary bicycle hubs, excluding coaster braking hubs and hub brakes | 8714 93 00 90 | 4% | None |
| Other bicycle brake parts | 8714 94 90 90 | 4% | None |
| Rear air shock absorbers with oil dampers for bicycle manufacture | 8714 99 90 50 | 4% | None |
Specify the motor, electronics and battery together
For hub motors, specify axle flats, dropout fit, mounting position, wheel-building geometry, cable exit and brake interface. Record rated voltage, continuous output, controller current limits, sensor arrangement and connector pin assignments. For controllers and displays, lock the communication protocol, firmware pairing, assistance settings and replacement-part compatibility. Approve the combination on the intended bicycle.
For battery packs, fix cell identity, capacity, enclosure, mounting rail, connector polarity, charger pairing and protective functions. Official guidance says e-bike lithium-ion batteries must contain safety mechanisms addressing thermal runaway. Request model-specific protection test records and charging instructions for review through testing and certification.
Request the battery's UN 38.3 test summary and supporting report references. This section of the transport testing manual addresses lithium-ion battery testing. Ask the proposed forwarder whether it also wants a material safety data sheet, often called an MSDS. Match every document to the actual pack and obtain written acceptance for the proposed packing configuration and route.
Choose a UK sourcing agent who can verify the factory, control component substitutions and reconcile inspection records with shipped models. Choose a forwarder with lithium-battery experience who will review the actual consignment before booking. Dangerous goods must be appropriately packaged and labelled. Agree who prepares the shipment documents, checks packing and handles the UK delivery leg.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 200 ordinary bicycle hubs, without motors under 8714 93 00 90, invoiced at £9,500 free on board, with £300 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,800. Duty at 4% is £392. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,192, so it is £2,038.40. Import taxes total £2,430.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £392 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match motor, controller, display, battery and charger references to the approved component list; check firmware versions, connector pin assignments and batch records.
Mechanical fit: inspect axle flats, threads, cable exits, mounting rails, wheel alignment and brake clearances against the drawings and approved installation.
Function: have competent personnel check the approved combination for display communication, assistance response, brake cut-off and operation under the agreed load; compare results with the sample.
Arrival and records: inspect crushed cartons, damaged cables, loose terminals, battery swelling and enclosure damage. Hold suspect packs out of testing and seek specialist advice. Reconcile battery documents and packing records using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Matching plugs can conceal different wiring, communication protocols or firmware. A replacement controller may draw more current than the approved battery combination supports. Cell substitutions, altered protective settings and a different charger can invalidate the buyer's compatibility checks. Require written approval and an evidence review before any substitution.
Freight problems arise when battery documents describe a different pack or the booking omits loose spare batteries. Send the forwarder the final packing list and battery configuration before dispatch. A sourcing agent's document collection should be checked against the forwarder's acceptance, while the customs broker separately confirms classification and any relief.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on e-bike parts from China?
The selected mechanical lines carry 4%. The wider heading has 0% to 4% ordinary duty, with 48.50% anti-dumping duty on some lines. The supplied data does not establish rates for motors, controllers, displays or batteries.
What battery documents should I request?
Request the exact pack specification, UN 38.3 test summary and report references. Ask the forwarder whether it also wants an MSDS, and confirm shipment acceptance for the actual pack and route.
How do I check a controller and display will work together?
Approve the communication protocol, firmware pairing, connector pin assignments and settings. Test the motor, controller, display and battery together on the intended bicycle before approving production.
How should I choose a UK agent and battery forwarder?
Ask the agent for factory-verification and substitution-control procedures. Ask the forwarder to review the exact battery, documents, packing and route, then confirm acceptance and responsibilities in writing.
