Sourcing bicycle suspension forks from China

Bicycle suspension forks from China have a 4% standard UK duty, with eligible suspensions reducing it to 0%. Some finished forks also carry 48.50% residual anti-dumping duty. Confirm the exact finish, intended use and relief conditions, and ensure forks sold to consumers are safe. Cambridge China Bridge sources bicycle suspension forks.

UK duty on bicycle suspension forks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8714 covers vehicle parts and accessories, including bicycle front forks. The relevant branches distinguish painted, anodised, polished or lacquered forks from other forks, and bicycle-manufacturing use from other descriptions. The table shows classification branches, rather than interchangeable codes. See the wider bicycle parts guide for other components.

The listed fork lines have 4% standard duty. Code 8714 91 30 35 also has 48.50% residual anti-dumping duty and no suspension. Code 8714 91 30 25 has a conditional 0.00 % authorised-use suspension; 8714 91 30 72 lists a 0.00 % tariff suspension. The suspension note for 8714 91 30 29 describes a magnesium alloy frame, so it does not establish relief for suspension forks. Ask your broker to resolve that mismatch.

The China exemption branches include quantities below 300 units per month on average over a period not exceeding 12 months, or specified transfers. Authorised use requires the prescribed use and customs supervision; confirm the authorisation and declaration requirements with your broker before claiming relief. The tariff also attaches a DCMS export licence control; ask your broker to confirm its relevance to your transaction. Confirm the commodity code before ordering.

Specify the steerer, axle and suspension together

Fix wheel and tyre clearance, travel, axle-to-crown length, offset, steerer shape and length, crown race seat, axle interface and brake mounting. Identify the intended bicycle and riding use. Record air or coil spring construction, damping adjustments, lockout behaviour, materials, finish and replacement seals against an approved drawing and sample.

Consumer forks sold in Great Britain must be safe under normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Ask for strength and fatigue test evidence matching the actual crown, steerer, lowers and axle assembly, rather than a similar catalogue model. Agree fitting, adjustment and servicing instructions, and batch identification. Arrange testing support before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 300 bicycle suspension forks; residual anti-dumping rate assumed under 8714 91 30 35, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,500. Duty at 4% is £1,260. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,760, so it is £6,552. Import taxes total £7,812; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,260 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the steerer, crown race seat, axle interface and brake mounts against the drawing; trial-fit samples to the intended bicycle and wheel.

Operation: cycle the fork through its travel, check smooth movement, rebound adjustment and lockout behaviour, and inspect for oil leakage or air loss.

Structure: examine the crown and steerer joint, axle retention, threads and casting surfaces; compare materials and test reports with the approved construction.

Arrival: check for bent steerers, scratched sliding surfaces and damaged seals; match model and batch markings to cartons and the packing list. Use the inspection guide to brief the checks.

What goes wrong

A fork can fit the wheel but still have the wrong steerer, brake mount, offset or axle-to-crown length. Other faults to check include sticking bushes, ineffective damping, leaking seals and loose axle retention. Keep separate acceptance records for each construction and adjustment variant.

A finished replacement fork is not automatically a manufacturing-use fork. Small order quantities alone do not establish entitlement to an exemption or suspension. Have the broker check the description and relief route before shipment, and compare the production sample with the tested assembly before releasing the balance.
