Sourcing Dysprosium Metal from China

Dysprosium metal from China carries 0% to 4% UK duty across the relevant lines: qualifying separated metal has a suspension, while dysprosium-containing rare-earth mixtures pay 4%. Confirm composition and the UK REACH position, and ensure correct labelling and packaging before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources dysprosium metal.

Dysprosium metal duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 2805 covers rare-earth metals, including dysprosium, whether separated or intermixed or interalloyed with other rare-earth metals. This guide focuses on dysprosium metal. See the wider metals guide for the rest of the heading.

Separated dysprosium of at least 95% purity by weight under 2805 30 31 25 carries 2% duty, reduced to 0% by the listed suspension. Other separated metal under 2805 30 80 00 carries 2%; the listed dysprosium-containing rare-earth mixtures carry 4%. These lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The suspension excludes mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing the suspended products.

The tariff attaches waste import and export controls. For waste from China entering England under notification controls, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Confirm the applicable waste requirements with your customs broker before ordering scrap or recovery material. Use the actual composition and purity to confirm the commodity code.

Specify dysprosium purity and metal form

State whether you want separated dysprosium or a named rare-earth blend. Specify dysprosium content by total sample weight and its relative purity within the rare-earth fraction separately. Agree limits for neighbouring rare earths, iron, oxygen and carbon, together with the sampling and test methods. Name the required ingot, lump or powder form and acceptable size distribution.

Agree sealed packing under argon or vacuum and batch identification linking each container to its certificate of analysis. Review the UK REACH registration position for the substance and importing legal entity. Before placing the material on the Great Britain market, the supply chain must ensure correct labelling and packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 kg of dysprosium-containing rare-earth interalloy without neodymium under 2805 30 10 50, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,200. Duty at 4% is £1,248. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,448, so it is £6,489.60. Import taxes total £7,737.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,248 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match container batch marks, the order and the certificate; check whether the composition describes separated dysprosium or a rare-earth blend.

Analysis: independently check dysprosium and trace rare earths, plus oxygen, carbon and iron, against the agreed specification; distinguish relative purity from total metal content.

Packing: inspect seals, liners and the agreed argon or vacuum protection; record damaged containers and visible oxidation before opening further stock.

Form and quantity: compare lump or ingot dimensions, powder size distribution and net weight with the order; use quality inspection to document discrepancies.

What goes wrong

A certificate can report high relative dysprosium purity while leaving oxygen, carbon or base-metal contamination unclear. Poor sealing can also allow oxidation during shipment. Agree acceptance criteria before production and investigate any difference between the supplied certificate and independent batch analysis before using the material.

A dysprosium-containing blend can be offered under the separated-metal code even though it does not qualify for that suspension. Match the declared composition to the tariff line rather than relying on the product name. Keep scrap and recovery offers separate from the specification for new metal, and resolve the attached waste controls before shipment.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dysprosium metal from China?

Qualifying separated dysprosium carries 2%, reduced to 0% by the listed suspension. Other separated dysprosium carries 2%; the listed dysprosium-containing rare-earth mixtures carry 4%. No trade remedy is shown.

Does the dysprosium duty suspension cover rare-earth blends?

The listed rare-earth blends containing dysprosium carry 4%.

How should I specify dysprosium metal purity?

Specify dysprosium by total sample weight and relative purity within the rare-earth fraction separately. Set limits for neighbouring rare earths, oxygen, carbon and iron, with agreed sampling and test methods.

What should I check before selling imported dysprosium metal?

Review the UK REACH registration position by substance and legal entity. Ensure correct labelling and packaging before placing it on the Great Britain market, and match the batch analysis to the supplied material.
