Sourcing domestic gas ovens from China

Domestic gas ovens of iron or steel from China carry 2% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty in the supplied tariff record. Before sale in Great Britain, confirm the gas-appliance conformity-assessment requirements for the exact model with the relevant authority; in-scope ovens also need energy labelling. UK duty on domestic gas ovens

Heading 7321 covers non-electric domestic appliances of iron or steel and their parts. Domestic gas cooking appliances with an oven, including separate ovens, fall under 7321 11 10 00. The table separates buying formats that share this code; it does not imply separate tariff lines. For the wider gas cooking family, see domestic gas hobs.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the oven and parts lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for these lines. Product compliance remains a separate check.

Confirm the construction, fuel and domestic use of each model before declaring it. Do not apply the oven code automatically to commercial cooking equipment or electric ovens. Use the commodity code guide.

Specify the oven and its gas configuration

State whether the oven is separate, built-in or part of a cooker. Agree cabinet opening dimensions, usable cavity, shelf positions, door clearance, ignition, thermostat, grill arrangement, cleaning access and spare parts. Specify the destination gas type and supply pressure rather than accepting the factory's standard burner configuration.

For Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority which approved or notified body certificates, declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking, and English instructions and warnings are required for the exact model and gas category. Obtain the applicable documents and check that the manufacturer can demonstrate the complete conformity-assessment history. See testing and certification.

In-scope domestic ovens also fall under ecodesign and energy-information rules. Ask for the efficiency evidence and technical documentation supporting the declaration, printed energy label and product fiche. Suppliers must produce these energy documents, and retailers must display the energy label when selling in shops or online.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 200 domestic gas ovens under 7321 11 10 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,000. Duty at 2% is £360. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,360, so it is £3,672. Import taxes total £4,032; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £360 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the production model, burner configuration and data plate to the certificates, declaration and approved sample. Check the gas category, nominal supply pressure and English instructions.

Operation: have a competent test provider check ignition, flame stability, flame-failure shut-off and gas joints. Compare thermostat behaviour and heating across shelf positions against the agreed sample.

Construction: inspect door seals, hinges, glazing, enamel, shelf supports and accessible edges. Check the cabinet fit and that trays slide without catching.

Arrival: photograph damaged cartons before unpacking, then check glass, controls and burner alignment. Match the energy label and fiche to the delivered model. Record findings using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A certificate for a similar oven can conceal a different burner, gas category or control assembly. A laboratory report presented as a conformity-body certificate does not establish the required assessment. Resolve mismatches before shipment rather than relying on the supplier's promise to send paperwork later.

Other checks can reveal uneven heating, poorly seated seals, loose shelf supports or transport-damaged door glass. Keep the agreed sample and component list available for comparison, and investigate substitutions before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on domestic gas ovens from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 2% for iron or steel domestic gas ovens under 7321 11 10 00 and parts under 7321 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Is a supplier's CE certificate enough for a gas oven?

Check the conformity body's certificate, exact model, gas category and supply pressure, together with the manufacturer's complete assessment history and declaration. A generic laboratory certificate is insufficient.

Do domestic gas ovens need an energy label?

In-scope domestic ovens need an accurate printed energy label, a product fiche and supporting technical documentation. Retailers must display the energy label when selling in shops or online.

What should I specify before ordering a built-in gas oven?

Specify cabinet dimensions, door clearance, gas type and pressure, burner and ignition configuration, thermostat, shelf layout and cleaning access. Approve a working sample and match production to it.
