UK duty on domestic gas hobs

Heading 7321 covers non-electric domestic appliances of iron or steel and their parts. A domestic gas hob without an oven falls within 7321 11 90 00; relevant appliance parts fall within 7321 90 00 00. The table shows buying variants sharing the same hob code. For the wider heading, see gas camping stoves.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the supplied lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls are recorded. Import VAT is 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm classification against the complete hob specification, construction and whether an oven is included. Do not apply the appliance-parts code automatically to every separately supplied component. Use the commodity code guide before declaring the shipment. For oven sourcing, see our domestic gas oven guide.

Specify the gas supply, burners and worktop fit

Specify the intended gas type, supply pressure, burner layout, ignition arrangement and flame supervision. Ask for drawings showing the worktop cut-out, underside clearance, fixing clips, gas connection and pan-support positions. Agree the surface material, finish, control-knob markings and spare-part references against an approved sample.

Confirm with the relevant authority which independent conformity assessment and marking are needed before placing the gas appliances on the Great Britain market. Check any approved or notified body certificates against the exact model and intended gas category and pressure. Require the declaration of conformity and English instructions, and confirm whether UKCA or CE marking is appropriate. Ask for ecodesign efficiency test evidence as well as gas-safety evidence; a declaration of conformity needs supporting technical documentation. See testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 200 domestic gas hobs under 7321 11 90 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,000. Duty at 2% is £360. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,360, so it is £3,672. Import taxes total £4,032; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £360 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare the hob, carton, data plate and certification model references; check the gas category, supply pressure, manufacturer details and English instructions.

Operation: have a suitably equipped specialist check gas joints for leaks, ignition, flame stability and flame-supervision shut-off against the agreed test procedure.

Fit: compare cut-out dimensions and fixing clips with the drawing; check that pan supports sit level and remain secure when cookware is moved.

Arrival: inspect glass or enamel surfaces, burner caps, knobs and supports for cracks, chips or displacement; record carton damage before unpacking. Agree the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A supplier may send certification for a similar-looking hob while changing burners, injectors or gas valves in production. Treat a model mismatch or undocumented component substitution as an unresolved issue before accepting the batch. Ask the relevant authority to confirm whether a generic laboratory certificate provides sufficient evidence for the applicable gas-appliance conformity assessment.

Other faults to look for are rocking pan supports, burner caps that do not seat properly, unreliable ignition, loose knobs and fixing clips that do not match the worktop drawing. Keep the approved sample, component list and packing specification available when inspecting production and investigating damaged arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gas hobs from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 2% for domestic gas hobs of iron or steel under 7321 11 90 00 and their parts under 7321 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Is a supplier's CE certificate enough for a gas hob?

Check any notified body certificate, exact model, gas category and supply pressure, plus the declaration of conformity and any production assessment. Ask the relevant authority to confirm which assessment documents are needed and whether a generic laboratory certificate is sufficient.

Can I order the same hob for natural gas and bottled gas?

Specify each gas version separately. Check that its certification, injectors, data plate and instructions match the intended gas category and supply pressure; appearance alone proves nothing.

What should I check when imported gas hobs arrive?

Check model identity, surface damage, burner-cap seating, pan-support stability, knobs, fixing clips and instructions. Arrange specialist leak and operating checks against the agreed procedure.
