UK duty on disposable shaving razors

Heading 8212 covers razors, razor blades and parts. Complete disposable safety razors with non-replaceable blades fall under 8212 10 10 00. The table shows buying variants within that same tariff line, rather than different classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 5 October 2026, the disposable razor line carries 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It attaches CITES import and export controls. Import VAT is normally 20%.

A CITES specimen can include an item made from animal or plant parts or derivatives. Obtain the materials specification and ask your customs broker to confirm the attached control's requirements for the shipment from China. Confirm the commodity code against the actual construction. For surgical-preparation products within the wider heading, see the surgical-preparation razor guide.

Specify the blade housing and shaving performance

Specify blade count, steel grade, edge coating, blade exposure and spacing, head angle, handle grip and protective cap. State whether the head is fixed or pivots, and confirm that the blades cannot be replaced. Agree lubricating-strip composition and performance, pack contents and artwork against an approved sample.

Consumer razors must meet general product safety requirements in Great Britain. Plan protective caps and packaging that protect users and handlers, and ask Trading Standards to confirm the UK importer details needed on the pack. In England and Wales, ask Trading Standards to confirm the razor-blade age restrictions and any exemption for your design. Check the actual housing rather than assuming every disposable design qualifies.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 100,000 twin-blade disposable shaving razors for a wholesaler under 8212 10 10 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,800. Duty at 2% is £196. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,996, so it is £1,999.20. Import taxes total £2,195.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £196 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Blade geometry: measure exposure and spacing against the approved drawing; inspect edges for burrs, chips and uneven alignment.

Shaving performance: compare controlled sample trials with the approved sample, checking pulling, dragging, rinsing and lubricating-strip retention.

Handle and cap: check wet grip, neck strength, pivot movement where fitted and cap retention after handling and packing.

Arrival and packs: inspect for rust, damp cartons, broken heads and displaced caps. Match pack contents, artwork and importer details to the approved specification. Agree sampling through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A sharp sample does not establish consistent production. Uneven blade exposure can cause cuts, poor edge coatings can pull hair, and weak necks can break under pressure. Lubricating strips may detach or wash away, while loose caps leave blades exposed inside retail packs.

Check corrosion resistance and cap retention on shipment samples as well as approved samples. Inspect stock again on arrival, particularly after damp transport. Record affected batches and keep defective stock separate while the supplier investigates.
