Sourcing DAC ICs from China
Digital-to-analogue converter ICs from China carry 0% UK duty across the listed relevant lines. Business-to-business component sales are outside the RoHS Regulations, but a final assembly placed on the market must comply. Check the exact part and its traceability. Cambridge China Bridge sources digital-to-analogue converter ICs.

Duty and classification for converter ICs
Heading 8542 covers electronic integrated circuits. This guide concerns digital-to-analogue converter chips, rather than assembled converter boards. The table includes other integrated circuits and processors or controllers combined with converters; these are alternative descriptions, not interchangeable codes.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls.
Confirm the commodity code using the datasheet, construction and principal function. Do not assign a processor code to a standalone converter merely because it has a digital interface. For related coverage within this heading, see analogue-to-digital converter ICs.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other integrated circuits, including standalone converters | 8542 39 90 00 | 0% | None |
| Other multi-component integrated circuits meeting the chapter note | 8542 39 11 00 | 0% | None |
| Other integrated circuits meeting the chapter note | 8542 39 19 00 | 0% | None |
| Other processors and controllers, potentially combined with converters | 8542 31 90 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the analogue output and interface
Fix the manufacturer, complete part number, package, pin arrangement and temperature grade. Specify resolution, channel count, voltage or current output, output range, reference source, supply rails and digital interface. Record the required offset, gain error, linearity, monotonicity and settling performance against the datasheet.
For audio applications, agree noise and distortion tests. For control applications, agree output behaviour during power-up, reset and loss of communication. Approve substitutions through testing in the intended circuit, including its output load.
Business-to-business component sales are outside the RoHS Regulations. When components enter a final assembly placed on the market, the full assembly must comply. Its manufacturer must determine and demonstrate component compliance before incorporation. Request part-specific substance declarations and supporting evidence from the supplier.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Reels of digital-to-analogue converter ICs for a production batch, illustrative only under 8542 39 90 00, invoiced at £40,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £40,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £40,600, so it is £8,120. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match chip markings, package, reel labels, lot numbers and date codes to the ordered part and traceable supplier records.
Output: test offset, gain, linearity, monotonicity and settling against the agreed datasheet limits under the intended supply, reference and load conditions.
Interface: check communication, channel addressing, reset state and power-up output on the intended circuit.
Handling: inspect sealed moisture barrier bags, desiccant and humidity indicators; check bent leads, damaged tape and signs of remarked or recovered stock.

What goes wrong
A substituted converter can fit the footprint but use different registers, reference arrangements or output ranges. A sample tested without the intended load can appear acceptable yet settle slowly or lose accuracy in use. Agree the test circuit before approving samples.
Broker stock can contain remarked grades, recovered chips or mixed lots. Poor moisture protection can cause damage during reflow. Keep suspect lots separate, retain samples and compare electrical results with a known good part before releasing stock.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on DAC ICs from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% on all relevant listed lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls.
Do converter chips need UKCA marking?
Confirm with the relevant authority whether the supplied components need UKCA marking. Check the finished product's applicable requirements separately; a chip's paperwork does not establish compliance of the complete device.
Can I accept a pin-compatible replacement?
Only after checking the interface, reference, output range, reset behaviour and analogue performance in your circuit. Matching the footprint does not establish equivalence.
How do I check for counterfeit converter ICs?
Prefer authorised distribution. For broker stock, obtain traceable reel and lot records, compare markings and test electrical performance against the datasheet; add X-ray checks where appropriate.
