Sourcing diesel fire-pump engines from China

Diesel fire-pump engines from China carry 4% UK duty across the selected power bands, with no anti-dumping duty. For Great Britain, establish whether the engine is supplied as partly completed machinery or within complete pump machinery, then obtain the matching safety documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources diesel fire-pump engines.

4% duty on the selected engine lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected diesel fire-pump engine lines under heading 8408 carried 4% duty for goods from China. The heading covers compression-ignition piston engines. This guide concerns engines supplied separately for driving fire pumps; have a complete pump assembly classified separately.

The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. The 0% suspensions listed under 8408 90 45 90 and 8408 90 47 90 cover specified engines for manufacturing vehicles of heading 8427. They do not provide general relief for fire-pump engines. The other selected lines have no suspension.

Confirm the commodity code using the engine specification, power and condition, rather than the supplier's description alone. For the wider engine family, see diesel generator engines.

Specify the engine around the fire pump

Give the factory the pump's absorbed power curve, operating speed, rotation direction, coupling drawing and mounting dimensions. Specify available shaft power with the agreed cooling arrangement and site conditions. Agree radiator or heat-exchanger cooling, exhaust connection, fuel connections, starting equipment, controller interfaces and accessible service points.

Agree the project's acceptance criteria with the pump designer before choosing the engine. Ask for a model-specific performance record, wiring diagram, English service manual and spare-parts list. Ask the approval authority whether the intended installation falls within non-road mobile machinery rules and which engine type-approval and marking requirements apply.

Where the engine is supplied as partly completed machinery, it must come with a declaration of incorporation and assembly instructions. For complete machinery, confirm the applicable conformity assessment, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking requirements with the relevant authority. The responsible person must ensure its technical file is compiled and available on request.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one new diesel fire-pump engine exceeding 30 kW but not exceeding 50 kW under 8408 90 45 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 4% is £368. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,568, so it is £1,913.60. Import taxes total £2,281.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £368 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and documents: match the delivered model and serial number to the nameplate, test record, drawings and applicable declaration. Check that the supplied cooling and starting equipment match the order.

Starting and controls: witness cold starting and repeated starts through the agreed controller. Verify start commands, running signals and alarm outputs against the approved wiring diagram.

Power and cooling: witness a loaded run at the agreed pump speed. Record shaft output, oil pressure and coolant temperature; inspect fuel, oil and coolant connections for leaks after running.

Arrival and fit: inspect mounts, shaft, coupling surfaces, wiring and cooling connections for transport damage. Check alignment against the pump drawing before commissioning. Use quality inspection to plan checks before dispatch and on arrival.

What goes wrong

A catalogue power figure at another speed can leave the pump short of shaft power. An engine may run successfully on a bench yet overheat with the supplied cooling arrangement. Wrong rotation, incompatible coupling dimensions and controller wiring differences can prevent the ordered engine from working with the pump.

A generic certificate can leave the delivery's actual configuration undocumented. Agree the supply boundary, acceptance tests and commissioning responsibilities in writing. Ask for testing and certification support when the factory's documents do not clearly cover the ordered engine and its intended installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on diesel fire-pump engines from China?

The selected engine lines carry 4% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Their listed suspensions do not provide general relief for fire-pump engines.

Does a diesel fire-pump engine need emission type approval?

Check the intended installation before deciding the approval route. Ask the approval authority whether non-road mobile machinery rules apply and which engine type-approval and marking requirements need to be met.

What documents should a separately supplied fire-pump engine have?

Where supplied as partly completed machinery, it must have a declaration of incorporation and assembly instructions. Also request the engine-specific test record, drawings and service manual.

Can I use a generator engine to drive a fire pump?

Do not select it from the catalogue power alone. Have the pump designer confirm shaft power at pump speed, rotation, coupling, cooling, starting equipment and controller compatibility.
